Description
Sora Hasegawa is a supporting character in Oh My Goddess!. She is a student at the Nekomi Institute of Technology and a member of the Nekomi Tech Motor Club, the college club around which much of the series' mortal-world action revolves. Her name, Hasegawa, is a deliberate choice by the creator, Kosuke Fujishima, who named several characters after major Japanese model kit manufacturers, with Hasegawa being one of them.
In terms of personality, Sora is depicted as a timid and mousy girl who initially lacks self-confidence. She is portrayed as being rather shy and quiet, often looking up to the series' primary couple, Keiichi Morisato and the goddess Belldandy, with a great deal of admiration. She views them as role models, and throughout the story, their kindness and encouragement play a pivotal role in helping her begin to overcome her deep-seated insecurities and learn to believe in herself.
Her role within the story is closely tied to the Motor Club. As a junior member, she is often seen helping with club activities. One of her significant character developments occurs when Keiichi, recognizing her potential, decides to step down from his leadership position. He bestows the directorship of the Motor Club to Sora. This is a major test of her growth, as she accepts this considerable responsibility despite a notable history of previous clubs she led having collapsed. This act demonstrates her willingness to face her fears and take on challenges, even when past experiences might suggest failure.
Regarding key relationships, her most important connections are with Keiichi and Belldandy, who serve as her mentors and sources of inspiration. She also harbors a romantic crush on Toshiyuki Aoshima, another member of the Motor Club. A specific, lighter aspect of her personality emerges when she drinks alcohol, as she becomes more uninhibited and whines to Keiichi about people mistaking her for a middle school student, even going so far as to gesture at her chest to show that she is physically developing. Sora Hasegawa does not possess any supernatural or notable mechanical abilities; her value as a character comes from her realistic, grounded struggle with personal confidence, making her journey of self-improvement one of her defining traits.
