Description
Itachi Uchiha is a shinobi from Konohagakure, born into the prestigious Uchiha clan as the elder son of Fugaku and Mikoto. From the earliest years of his life, he was recognized as a prodigy, demonstrating academic and tactical abilities far beyond his age. His experiences at the age of four, during the turmoil of the Third Great Ninja War, instilled in him a deep-seated pacifism and a desire to understand the world, its conflicts, and the nature of true peace. This pursuit of understanding led him to study the history of shinobi and his village, cultivating a perspective that was not limited by the narrow interests of his own clan.

Itachi's personality is defined by a profound internal conflict between his gentle nature and the brutal actions he is forced to take. He is exceptionally calm, insightful, and mature, possessing a strategic mind that was once compared to that of a Hokage. Despite his genius, he was often isolated, as his advanced way of thinking set him apart from his peers. He abhors violence and war, and he holds no self-righteous loyalty to his clan, believing there are greater goods to protect. This is exemplified by his kindness toward a young Naruto Uzumaki, recognizing him as a victim rather than a monster. He is naturally stoic and reserved, keeping his emotions hidden to make rational, unbiased decisions. Itachi is also defined by his immense self-sacrifice and his willingness to bear hatred and infamy to protect others, specifically his village and his younger brother, Sasuke.

Itachi's motivations are a central mystery of the narrative. On the surface, he is a criminal who massacred his entire clan for power, but his true driving force is the protection of Konohagakure and his brother Sasuke. Faced with an impossible choice between a coup d'état led by his own family that would lead to a devastating civil war, and the annihilation of his clan ordered by the village's leadership, he chose to become a double agent. He accepted the mission to eliminate the Uchiha to prevent a larger conflict, sparing Sasuke out of love and charging him with becoming a hero who would kill the "villain" Itachi, thereby restoring the clan's honor. He then infiltrated the criminal organization Akatsuki as a spy for Konoha, using his position to monitor threats against the village.

Throughout the story, Itachi serves as an antagonist and a benchmark of power, particularly for his brother. In the first part of the series, he returns to Konoha, not to capture Naruto, but to remind the village elders of his continued existence and to check on Sasuke's safety. His brutal psychological torture of Kakashi Hatake with his Mangekyo Sharingan demonstrates the terrifying power he possesses. His role culminates in a long-awaited battle with Sasuke, which he fights while terminally ill. In his final moments, he dies with a smile, having removed a cursed seal and the threat of Orochimaru from his brother, and pushing Sasuke onto a path of strength. His truth is only revealed after his death, transforming him from a villain into a tragic martyr. He is later reincarnated during the Fourth Great Ninja War, where he breaks free from the controlling summoning technique, confronts his brother again, and admits his past failures in trying to do everything alone. He accepts his mistakes, reconciles with Sasuke, and ultimately ends the war's reanimation technique before his soul finally passes on.

His most significant relationship is with his brother, Sasuke Uchiha. Itachi's every major action is ultimately for Sasuke's sake, from sparing him to traumatizing him to make him stronger, and finally, to apologizing and showing him the truth. Other key relationships include his friendship with Shisui Uchiha, a comrade whose death awakened Itachi's Mangekyo Sharingan and whose will he inherited to protect the village. In the Akatsuki, he partnered with Kisame Hoshigaki, who respected him. His relationship with his parents, Fugaku and Mikoto, is also pivotal; they understood his choice in the end and did not resist death, proud of their son's difficult decision.

Notable abilities
Itachi is an exceptionally powerful shinobi, with prowess that even Orochimaru, one of the legendary Sannin, admitted was superior to his own. His primary power comes from his Sharingan, which he awakened as a child, and its evolved form, the Mangekyo Sharingan. With this ocular power, he can use Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu that grants him complete control over space, time, and reality within the victim's mind, allowing him to inflict days of psychological torture in a fraction of a second. He also wields Amaterasu, the "Flame of Hell" which produces inextinguishable black flames that burn anything in their path. His ultimate defense and offense is the Susanoo, a gigantic humanoid avatar made of chakra. Itachi's Susanoo is unique, wielding the ethereal Totsuka Blade, which can seal anything it pierces, and the Yata Mirror, which can repel any physical or spiritual attack. These weapons were said to make him virtually invincible. Beyond his dojutsu, he is a master of taijutsu, ninjutsu, and bukijutsu, with incredible speed and shuriken-throwing precision. He is also highly proficient in fire release techniques and genjutsu, even capable of trapping an opponent in a looped reality with the forbidden technique Izanami.
