Description
Idate Morino is a character who appears exclusively in the original Naruto anime. He is the younger brother of Ibiki Morino, the renowned chief interrogator of Konohagakure. Idate was once a genin of the Hidden Leaf Village, but a series of unfortunate events led him to abandon his life as a ninja.

As a young genin, Idate was insecure and desperate for recognition. He failed the Chunin Exams, a failure he protested to his older brother, Ibiki, who told him he might not be suited to be a ninja. His desire to prove himself made him an easy target for his teacher at the time, a man named Aoi Rokusho. Aoi manipulated Idate, convincing him that stealing the treasured Sword of the Thunder God and a secret scroll from the village would guarantee his promotion to chunin. Idate committed the theft, but Aoi betrayed him, taking the stolen items and defecting to the Hidden Rain Village. This left Idate labeled as a fugitive from his own village. While fleeing, a fire separated him from his brother Ibiki, leading Idate to believe for years that Ibiki had died in the flames. Consumed by guilt and shame for abandoning his brother and his home, Idate fled Konoha and eventually ended up in the Land of Tea.

When first encountered, Idate presents himself as a brash and arrogant young man who openly states a deep hatred for ninja. He is a runner for the Wasabi family, one of two rival clans in the Land of Tea, and is hired to compete in a sacred race known as the Todoroki Shrine Race. His primary motivation is to repay the kindness of Jirocho Wasabi, the head of the family who took him in and gave him a second chance after his betrayal and exile. Idate’s antagonistic attitude toward ninja is a defensive mechanism; a way to mask his profound sense of guilt over being manipulated by Aoi and for what he perceives as his cowardice in abandoning his brother. Beneath the surface, he is insecure and struggles with feelings of worthlessness.

His role in the story occurs when Team 7, consisting of Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno, is assigned to be his bodyguard for the race. Initially, he is difficult and uncooperative, even tricking the team into paying for his meal and showing off his superior speed. However, as the mission progresses and they face attacks from the rival Wagarashi family's hired ninja, led by his former teacher Aoi, Idate's past is revealed. Hearing his tragic story, Naruto forges a connection with him, relating to his feelings of being an outcast and his need to be acknowledged. This friendship allows Idate to confront his past, overcome his trauma-related fear of fire, and find the courage to finish the race, ultimately winning for the Wasabi family and regaining his self-respect.

His key relationships are central to his development. He shares a complex bond with his older brother, Ibiki. Idate both seeks his approval and is terrified of his judgment, having lived with the guilt of believing he abandoned him. Their reconciliation at the end of the arc, where Ibiki acknowledges that Idate no longer has the eyes of a coward, is a pivotal moment for the character. Jirocho Wasabi serves as a surrogate father figure, and Idate is fiercely loyal to him, valuing the simple pocket knife Jirocho gave him as a treasured possession. His negative relationship with Aoi, his manipulative former teacher, represents the embodiment of his past mistakes that he must overcome.

In terms of abilities, while he no longer considers himself a ninja, Idate has retained and honed several skills. His most notable talent is his incredible running speed, which he has trained to surpass that of most ninja. He uses a training method similar to Rock Lee and Might Guy, wearing heavy weights on his legs to build up his speed and power. He is also proficient in basic ninja skills, including the ability to quickly notice and break free from a genjutsu. His greatest strength, however, lies in his determination and endurance when he has something to fight for.
