Description
Enma, also known as the Monkey King, is a powerful animal summoning contract creature from the hidden village of Konohagakure. He is most famously the personal summon of Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, and has served as his long-time partner in battle.
Enma is an elderly and highly intelligent monkey with white fur covering his body and tail, long white hair tied back, with matching long sideburns and a goatee. His typical attire consists of a black suit with mesh armor underneath, worn with a sleeveless kimono-style shirt that features tiger stripe patterns and white fur trimmings, all secured with a red sash. He also proudly wears a Konoha forehead protector, signifying his allegiance to the village. His design and abilities are a clear homage to the legendary Sun Wukong, the Monkey King from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West.
His history is deeply intertwined with that of the Third Hokage. Enma was present during Hiruzen's time as a teacher to the legendary Sannin—Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru—often being summoned during their training sessions. He was also by Hiruzen's side during pivotal moments in the village's history, including the attack of the Nine-Tailed Fox, where he fought the monstrous beast alongside his summoner, and later witnessed the fox being sealed within the newborn Naruto Uzumaki. One of the most defining events in his past was the defection of Orochimaru. When Hiruzen confronted his rogue student, Enma urged the Hokage to kill Orochimaru then and there, a plea that went unheeded as Hiruzen could not bring himself to destroy his former pupil.
In terms of personality, Enma is defined by his fierce loyalty and deep concern for Hiruzen. As a long-time companion, he is one of the few beings who speaks to the Hokage with complete frankness, unafraid to openly criticize his decisions, especially concerning Orochimaru. He is blunt and can be gruff, but his actions always demonstrate his care for the Third Hokage. This protectiveness is most evident during battle; when Hiruzen is injured, Enma reacts with immediate anger and violence against the attacker. He is quick to defend his summoner and possesses a strong sense of right and wrong, believing that Orochimaru should have been eliminated long ago to prevent future suffering.
Enma's role in the main story is almost exclusively that of Hiruzen's closest ally in combat. He is summoned during the Konoha Crush arc to aid the aging Hokage in his final battle against Orochimaru. Despite the immense odds, including fighting against the reanimated First and Second Hokages, Enma proves to be an invaluable asset. After Hiruzen's heroic death, Enma fades from the narrative until the Fourth Great Ninja War, where he is summoned again by a reincarnated Hiruzen. In this conflict, he once more transforms to help free Naruto and other shinobi from the roots of the Divine Tree, showing his continued dedication to the village and his old friend.
Enma's key relationship is solely with Hiruzen Sarutobi. Their bond is not merely one of summoner and servant but of two veteran warriors who have fought side-by-side for decades. Enma's loyalty is such that he remains respectful of the Third Hokage's legacy even after his death, honoring him as a true ninja warrior. He also has a brief but notable connection to Orochimaru, whom he regards with extreme distrust and a desire to destroy, a sentiment born from the tragedy he foresaw years earlier.
Regarding his abilities, Enma is an exceptionally powerful summon. He possesses immense physical strength, enough to briefly manhandle the reanimated First and Second Hokages in close combat, and is highly knowledgeable about various jutsu and their weaknesses. His most famous and unique ability is Transformation: Adamantine Staff. In this form, his body transforms into an extendable staff as hard as diamond, which was Hiruzen Sarutobi's preferred weapon throughout his career as the God of Shinobi. In this state, Enma can still perceive his surroundings, move of his own will, and even speak. He can also extend to tremendous lengths, as seen when he pushed the Nine-Tails away from the village, and can manifest parts of his monkey body, such as claws or eyes, from the staff to surprise opponents. Despite its incredible hardness, Enma admits that the legendary Sword of Kusanagi wielded by Orochimaru is capable of cutting him. Another potent technique is the Adamantine Prison Wall, where Enma creates multiple clones of himself in staff form to form an incredibly tough, lattice-like barrier that can block even powerful attacks like the First Hokage's Wood Release techniques.
