Description
Kinuta Dosu is a supporting antagonist from the early part of the story, serving as the unofficial leader of a three-person team from the Hidden Sound Village. Alongside his teammates Zaku Abumi and Kin Tsuchi, Dosu is sent to the Hidden Leaf Village to participate in the Chunin Exams, though their true mission is to test and eliminate the young ninja Sasuke Uchiha on behalf of their master, Orochimaru.

Dosu is a genin, fourteen years old, standing 158 centimeters tall. His appearance is distinct and memorable; he keeps his entire face wrapped in bandages, revealing only his left eye and a small portion of his forehead where his Sound headband is worn. His attire consists of a long, baggy, light-colored poncho or coat with sleeves that often conceal his arms, and he wears a long, fur-like scarf around his neck. His posture is notably poor, often depicted as hunched over, which gives him a slightly awkward and menacing silhouette.

In terms of personality, Dosu is the most intelligent, analytical, and level-headed member of his team. Unlike his more reckless and arrogant companions, Dosu prefers to observe and assess a situation before taking action. He is a skilled strategist, able to quickly interpret subtle clues, such as deciphering answers on a written exam by listening to the sound of a pencil scratching on paper, or deducing the existence and purpose of Sakura Haruno's traps. While he is calculating and can appear ruthless, he also possesses a strong sense of loyalty to his own team, showing genuine concern for Zaku and Kin when they are injured, vowing to avenge them, and refusing to abandon them even in the face of a dangerous enemy. He is, however, deeply suspicious and begins to question his mission, ultimately realizing that he and his teammates are nothing more than disposable pawns used by Orochimaru to gauge Sasuke's potential.

Dosu's primary motivations evolve as his story progresses. Initially, he is a dutiful operative, focused on completing Orochimaru's mission to assassinate Sasuke. However, after witnessing the power of the cursed seal placed upon Sasuke, he deduces his master's true plan and feels betrayed. His goal then shifts from serving Orochimaru to sabotaging him. He becomes determined to prove his own worth and defy his assigned role by personally killing Sasuke, thereby ruining Orochimaru's experiment. This independent and rebellious streak sets him apart from many of Orochimaru's other followers.

His role in the story is confined to the Chunin Exam arc. He and his team act as a significant obstacle for the main characters during the Forest of Death portion of the exams, where they confront Sakura, Rock Lee, and later Sasuke. After his team is defeated, Dosu advances to the tournament preliminaries, where he easily defeats Choji Akimichi by using his sound abilities to disrupt his opponent's balance. Between the preliminaries and the final round, Dosu attempts to execute his plan to kill Sasuke by first eliminating Sasuke's scheduled opponent, the dangerously unstable Gaara of the Sand. He confronts Gaara at night, believing his sound-based attacks will be effective, but he is quickly and brutally killed by Gaara, who transforms under the influence of the demon Shukaku sealed within him.

Dosu does not undergo significant development, as his appearance in the series is brief. However, his arc is a complete one: he transitions from a loyal servant to a disillusioned rebel who tries to take control of his own destiny, a path that ultimately leads to his demise. His death serves to demonstrate the overwhelming and uncontrollable power of Gaara, heightening the stakes for the upcoming final matches.

His notable abilities are centered entirely on the manipulation of sound waves. He wears a mechanical device shaped like a speaker or gauntlet on his right arm. By channeling his chakra through this device, he can generate powerful, targeted sound waves. His signature technique, the Melody Arm, produces a resonant frequency that attacks the inner ear of his target, causing intense pain, severe dizziness, nausea, and loss of balance, rendering an opponent almost helpless regardless of their physical strength. The attack is particularly insidious because it is difficult to block; covering one's ears is ineffective because the sound can also travel through the water in a person's body to cause damage. Dosu also possesses incredibly acute natural hearing, which he uses for information-gathering, such as eavesdropping on conversations from a distance or deciphering the answers on an exam paper by listening to the strokes of a pen.
