Description
Mizuki, sometimes referred to as Master Mizuki, is a significant figure in the early narrative as the first major opponent encountered. He is a chunin, a mid-level ninja, who formerly served as an instructor at the Ninja Academy in Konohagakure, the Hidden Leaf Village. His character is defined by a deep-seated jealousy and a ruthless ambition that he conceals behind a mask of politeness and kindness.
Born on October 21, Mizuki had a long and complicated history with his fellow academy instructor, Iruka Umino. The two were childhood friends, but their relationship was fundamentally unbalanced. While they appeared to be allies, Mizuki harbored a festering resentment towards Iruka, who received more attention and sympathy from the village, particularly after the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox attack. Unable to stand being looked down upon, Mizuki pretended to be Iruka's friend to live vicariously through that attention and to discreetly make his life miserable.
This envy is the core of Mizuki's personality. In truth, he cares for nothing and no one beyond his own rise to power. He takes pride in his belief that he is unbound by morals or teamwork, willing to sacrifice anyone to complete his goals. This philosophy is demonstrated most starkly in an anime-original backstory, where during a mission, he suffocated a wounded comrade whom he considered a hindrance, then filed a false report to cover his actions. This transgression was witnessed by the renegade ninja Orochimaru, who praised Mizuki's boldness and granted him a prototype Cursed Seal, a forbidden power that corrupts its user. From that point on, Mizuki secretly became a follower of Orochimaru, believing the traitor truly acknowledged his potential, a validation he felt was unfairly denied to him by Konoha.
Mizuki's primary role in the story is as the instigator of the very first major conflict. Desperate to gain power and prove himself, he plotted to steal the Scroll of Seals, a forbidden repository of powerful techniques, to present to Orochimaru. To do this, he manipulated a young Naruto Uzumaki, a student who had just failed his graduation exam. Pretending to be sympathetic, Mizuki advised Naruto to steal the scroll as a secret alternative test. In reality, Mizuki planned to use Naruto as a scapegoat, kill him to hide his own deception, and flee the village with the scroll.
When Iruka discovered Naruto and the scroll, Mizuki's plan unraveled. He attempted to turn Naruto against Iruka by cruelly revealing the truth Naruto had never been told: that he is the jinchuriki, the living container of the Nine-Tailed Fox that destroyed the village. This act of emotional devastation, followed by an attempt to kill both Naruto and Iruka, solidifies Mizuki's role as a cold and dishonorable antagonist. His betrayal is complete when Naruto, having learned the powerful Multiple Shadow Clone Technique from the very scroll he stole, uses it to overwhelm and defeat Mizuki, saving Iruka's life.
Key relationships in Mizuki's life are defined by his selfishness. His connection with Iruka is one of manipulative jealousy. He also had a fiancée named Tsubaki, who genuinely saw him as a sweet man. Mizuki, however, did not return her feelings. He took advantage of her lingering affection, used her to further his own plans, and ultimately discarded her without a second thought.
Mizuki undergoes notable development primarily in an anime-exclusive story arc, the Mizuki Tracking Mission. After being imprisoned for his crimes, he escapes from the Konoha Strict Correctional Facility. His time in prison has changed his appearance, making him much more muscular and physically formidable. In this arc, he uses a potion derived from his Cursed Seal to undergo a monstrous physical transformation, gaining tremendous raw strength at the cost of his speed and, eventually, his health. This development shows that his ambition and hatred have only deepened; he seeks revenge against Iruka and Naruto for his imprisonment. However, the incomplete potion ultimately causes his body to begin self-destructing, turning him into a withered old man. While the Fifth Hokage, Tsunade, is able to save his life, Mizuki permanently loses all of his abilities as a ninja.
As for his notable abilities, Mizuki is portrayed as a clever and talented ninja with a knack for learning techniques. While he only officially held the rank of chunin, even the Third Hokage admitted he was an excellent shinobi, and his lack of promotion was due to suspicions about his conduct, not a lack of skill. In the anime, he demonstrates a range of abilities, including proficiency with giant shuriken, Earth Release techniques for hiding underground, and various genjutsu (illusionary techniques) and ninjutsu that he combines in creative ways. His physical strength, especially after his prison training, is considerable, and his time in darkness adapted his eyesight for combat in low-light conditions. Ultimately, his most dangerous weapon is his cunning and manipulative nature, which he uses to exploit the desires and weaknesses of others for his own gain.
