Description
Kidomaru is a fictional character from the narrative of Naruto. He serves as a prominent antagonist and is a member of the Otogakure, or Sound Village, known for being part of an elite unit called the Sound Four, a group of four powerful shinobi who act as personal bodyguards to the rogue ninja Orochimaru.
A shinobi in his early teens, Kidomaru possesses a distinctly inhuman physiology that complements his combat style. He has dark skin and black hair and is most notably characterized by his six arms, which grant him a significant advantage in both close-quarters combat and when performing complex techniques. He also has a third eye on his forehead, which is typically kept closed but greatly enhances his perception and accuracy when opened, usually during the activation of his cursed seal's second level.
Kidomaru's personality is defined by a detached and arrogant view of combat, which he approaches as if it were a game. He frequently uses terminology from gaming, referring to opponents as minor characters and analyzing the difficulty of a fight in terms of levels. This mindset reflects a deep-seated love for battle and a cruel sense of entertainment derived from watching his opponents struggle. He is noted by Orochimaru as being the most intellectual member of the Sound Four, a trait that manifests in his analytical and tactical approach to fighting. Despite his cunning, he shares the group's overarching arrogance and has a tendency to prolong fights with interesting opponents for his own amusement, a flaw that his enemies ultimately exploit.
His primary motivation is serving Orochimaru, though this loyalty seems rooted more in the opportunity for power and the thrill of combat than in any moral conviction. He is entirely without a sense of morality, viewing violence and murder as simple diversions. He is first seen during Orochimaru's invasion of Konohagakure, the Hidden Leaf Village, where he and the other Sound Four members erect the Four Violet Flames Formation, a powerful barrier to isolate the Third Hokage from potential aid during his fatal battle with Orochimaru.
Kidomaru's most significant role in the story is during the Sasuke Recovery Mission. He is part of the team sent to persuade Sasuke Uchiha to defect from Konoha and join Orochimaru. After convincing Sasuke to leave, the Sound Four place him in a death-like state to allow his cursed seal to mature, sealing him in a portable coffin. As the team from Konoha pursues them, Kidomaru stays behind to eliminate the pursuers. Using his webbing, he easily captures several members of the retrieval squad before being confronted by Neji Hyuga, the most gifted member of the Hyuga clan.
His battle with Neji is a showcase of his analytical genius. Kidomaru’s key relationships are primarily with his teammates. Within the Sound Four, he is a peer to the other members, Jirobo, Tayuya, and Sakon and Ukon, and their chain of command includes the more powerful Kimimaro, whom they all acknowledge as their superior. However, his most critical relationship is with his opponent, Neji Hyuga. In their fight, Kidomaru is forced to develop and adapt, ultimately deducing the exact location of the Byakugan's blind spot, a feat that earns him Neji's acknowledgment as his strongest adversary.
Throughout the battle, Kidomaru demonstrates his notable abilities, which center on his spider-like traits. He can produce chakra-infused spider silk from his mouth and sweat glands, which can be used to trap enemies in unbreakable webbing or to form a special metal called Sticky Gold. This metal is incredibly versatile; he can secrete it to form a powerful armor that is impervious to chakra-based attacks, including the Hyuga clan's Gentle Fist, and can also shape it into weapons such as kunai. In the second stage of his cursed seal, his power is greatly amplified. His skin darkens, his hair turns white, his third eye opens, and he creates a massive spider war bow from Sticky Gold. The arrows from this bow are devastatingly powerful, capable of obliterating trees and creating craters, and he can guide them with great precision using threads of silk.
While he succeeds in mortally wounding Neji by repeatedly targeting his blind spot, his overconfidence proves fatal. Neji uses the guiding thread attached to Kidomaru's final arrow to channel a surge of chakra back into his body, striking his heart and shutting down his chakra network. As he dies, Kidomaru reverts to his normal form, questioning how he could have lost. He is later reincarnated by Kabuto Yakushi during the Fourth Great Ninja War, where he once again confronts Neji and other former enemies before being defeated and sealed away permanently.
