Description
Dr. Sonoida, known as Dr. Z in English, begins as the main antagonist before undergoing substantial development. He commands the Alpha Gang, dedicated to gathering scattered dinosaur cards to dominate the world by controlling dinosaurs. His Japanese name cleverly reverses the syllables of "dinosaur," while his English alias contrasts the Alpha Gang's 'A' with the last letter 'Z'.
Born in the future, he adopted the Alpha Trio (Ursula, Zander, and Ed) and later Rod and Laura from an orphanage, raising them while unmarried. Though inherently kind in youth, this trait faded. In 2126, he joined Dr. Ancient and Dr. Cretacia on a mission to rescue dinosaurs via time travel to the Mesozoic era. Secretly, he developed Move Cards and weaponized dinosaurs for combat, betraying the preservation goal. This culminated in mutiny; when Ancient and Cretacia tried returning to the future with their infant son Rex, he ejected them from the timeship Backlander. Crew member Jonathan intervened to protect baby Rex, dislodging the Element Stones during the struggle. This caused the Backlander to crash in the present day, scattering dinosaur cards globally and stranding the Alpha Gang. Rex and Jonathan landed twelve years earlier.
Based at Zeta Point, a mobile artificial island hiding the damaged Backlander, he usually directed the Alpha Trio from his laboratory to retrieve activated cards. There, he invented technology, recreated Move Cards, and located new cards using dinosaur bone chants. His inventions, including vehicles and gadgets, often malfunctioned or were single-use. He rarely entered the field personally, except for missions involving his personally raised "Secret Dinosaurs," though these creatures frequently rejected or fought him. He occasionally summoned dinosaurs like Terry the Tyrannosaurus or Spiny the Spinosaurus using an Alpha Scanner.
A turning point arrived with betrayal by Seth, his long-time assistant. Before Dr. Z could claim credit for Seth's creation of the Black Tyrannosaurus, Seth expelled him and the Alpha Gang from Zeta Point. This forced an uneasy alliance with the D-Team to confront Seth. During the Sanjo City battle, Rex saved him from the Black Tyrannosaurus, prompting an apology for ejecting Rex's parents. He helped summon dinosaurs to fight the Black Tyrannosaurus but was thrown from Pachycephalosaurus during the conflict, becoming incapacitated. Afterward, Drs. Ancient and Cretacia were discovered in stasis aboard the Backlander, potentially rescued earlier by Dr. Z out of hidden guilt. Confined for their actions, the Alpha Gang prepared to return to the future.
When Spectral Space Pirates kidnapped the D-Team's parents, he helped repair the Backlander for pursuit but accidentally sent it adrift through time, stranding Rod and Laura. Crash-landing in the Cretaceous, he briefly reverted to antagonism but faced resistance from wild dinosaurs and the Space Pirates. His role diminished during the subsequent journey across historical eras, though he provided strategic input. He developed countermeasures against Spectral Armor, creating Element Boosters that enabled DinoTector Armor for the D-Team's dinosaurs. In the Caribbean, he adopted a pirate persona named "Whitebeard," captaining a ship and insisting on the title. In Ancient China, he was repeatedly mistaken for figures like Sanzo Hoshi during his fruitless search for the Fruit of Eternal Life, leading to comedic failures and village expulsions. In Persia, he was imprisoned but later rescued by the Alpha Trio.
Personality-wise, he displays egotism, a short temper, and stubbornness, dismissing opposing ideas unless they flatter him. He frequently claims others' ideas as his own and avoids responsibility. Frugal and possessive, he refuses significant expenses and claims desired objects. Despite assertiveness, he is easily intimidated by his robotic maid Helga. Flecks of his earlier kindness surface when encountering his Secret Dinosaurs or when grandchildren Rod and Laura are endangered. His cowardice is evident as he often flees danger or uses others as shields. He possesses significant technological prowess for inventions, though he lacks understanding of Helga's programming. An ambition to become "Dinosaur King" drives him, though he sometimes displays a fear of dinosaurs despite his obsession.
