Tetsuo Gotō
Description
Tetsuo Gotō was a Japanese actor and voice actor born on August 10, 1950, in Gifu Prefecture. A graduate of Tamagawa University, he began his performance career in theater, joining the En Theatre Research Institute in 1975 and becoming a member of the En Theatre Group the following year. He made his voice acting debut in 1996 and built a prolific career in anime, video games, and the dubbing of foreign films until his passing on November 6, 2018 from esophageal cancer.
Gotō had an extensive career in anime, often providing his deep and distinctive voice to a wide range of supporting characters, from authority figures to comedic and eccentric personalities. He had multiple roles in the long-running series One Piece, voicing the Impel Down Vice-Warden Hannyabal, the Celestial Dragon Saint Mjosgard, and the Donquixote Family executive Lao G. In Dragon Ball Super, he played the kind-hearted Supreme Kai Gowasu. He was also known for portraying the sentient magical sword Derflinger across the various installments of The Familiar of Zero anime series.
His other notable anime roles include the warden Hannibal in One Piece, Arvind Robbie Lavie in Planetes, Dr. Sonoida in Dinosaur King, Martin the lifeguard in Squid Girl, Ivica Tanovic in Eureka Seven AO, Bizeff in Hunter × Hunter (2011), and Village Chief Omuna in Monster Hunter Stories RIDE ON. He also appeared as Gyouchi Ou in Sakura Taisen: New York NY., Oshō Yakushi in Kuromukuro, Tetsuto Mifune in KADO - The Right Answer, Dare Kochak in Armored Trooper Votoms: Pailsen Files, and Minoru Sagisaka in Karas.
Beyond anime, Gotō was a prolific dubbing artist, serving as the regular Japanese voice for American actor Kevin Dunn, which included the role of Ron Witwicky in the Transformers film series (Transformers, Revenge of the Fallen, and Dark of the Moon). He was also the Japanese dubbing voice for actors such as Mum Jokmok, Paul Giamatti, Eddie Marsan, and Toby Jones. One of his most acclaimed dubbing performances was as the voice of Edna Mode in the Japanese dub of the Pixar film The Incredibles. He contributed to video games as well, voicing characters such as Doctor Neo Cortex in the Crash Bandicoot series and Supreme Executive Chairman Drek in Ratchet & Clank.
