Description
Ivica Tanovic is the chief of Team Pied Piper, an elite unit within the organization Generation Bleu. He commands the team from the bridge of its mothership, the Triton, a role for which he is often simply addressed as Chief by his subordinates. Physically, he is a towering middle-aged man, though he is frequently seen slouching, a habit he attributes to a bad back. His typical appearance is marked by sunglasses, a mustache, and formal attire consisting of a vest and tie.

Tanovic's personality is defined by a stoic and stern exterior that masks a profound sense of guilt and a fierce protective instinct. He carries the heavy burden of his past, having witnessed the destruction of his homeland in the Balkans due to political conflicts, an event that also claimed the lives of his wife and child. This trauma shapes his core motivation: a deep-seated resolve to prevent the loss of young lives. This mission is ironically reflected in the name he chose for his team. When asked by the young protagonist Ao Fukai, Tanovic explains that the Pied Piper of Hamelin was a figure who led children to their deaths, a grim reality he feels he has repeated throughout his life, first during the war in his country and then by commanding the child pilots of Generation Bleu. Despite this tragic symbolism, his true intention is to use his position to protect these young pilots from harm, making him a commander driven by atonement.

Within the story, Tanovic acts as a crucial mentor and authority figure for the young members of Pied Piper, particularly for Ao. He is one of the few people who knows the truth about Ao's mother, Eureka, having fought alongside her during a Scub Burst incident in Okinawa ten years before the series begins. On that day, Eureka vanished while protecting the island, leaving her child Ao behind. Tanovic was initially invited to join Generation Bleu following this event but declined, feeling the need to address the injustices in his own country. He eventually accepted the offer, bringing his military experience and sense of responsibility to the organization. His position grants him high authority within Generation Bleu, allowing him to speak as an equal with its president, Christophe Blanc, and he is known to be a man of significant respect among his peers.

The character's development is revealed largely through flashbacks and his interactions with the team. His rigid demeanor is frequently challenged by his responsibility for Ao and the other child pilots, Fleur Blanc and Elena Peoples. The weight of his past is made explicit when he confesses that he has been leading children to their deaths ever since his own family was killed, a confession that underscores his tragic sense of duty. His primary relationship is with Ao, whom he protects with the urgency of someone who failed to protect his own child and witnessed Eureka's sacrifice. His alliance with the organization is complex, as he is primarily focused on protecting the children under his command and dealing with the threats posed by the mysterious beings known as Secrets, rather than the political or corporate goals of Generation Bleu itself.

Regarding notable abilities, Ivica Tanovic is not an IFO pilot like the younger members of his team. Instead, his skills lie in leadership, strategy, and firsthand combat experience. He is a capable soldier, having been seen engaging a Secret directly with heavy weaponry, demonstrating that his role is not limited to remote command. His primary asset is his tactical mind and his unwavering determination to command from the front lines aboard the Triton, ensuring the safety of his pilots during dangerous operations.
