TV-Series
Description
Crowley Hamon is a character from the Universal Century timeline who serves as the common-law wife and closest confidante of Ramba Ral, a celebrated ace pilot of the Principality of Zeon. While she does not hold an official military rank in the original television series, she is far from a passive observer, acting as Ral’s second-in-command and playing a vital role in the operations of his squadron. Her authority is recognized by the soldiers under Ral’s command, who respect her keen insight and follow her orders as readily as they do his, a testament to her competence and strong leadership presence.

In terms of personality, Hamon is characterized by her dignified and resolute demeanor. She is a mature woman whose confidence and perceptiveness allow her to assess situations and people with great accuracy. This is notably demonstrated during a chance encounter in the desert town of Sodom, where she and Ral meet Amuro Ray, the teenage pilot of the Federation’s Gundam. Despite being on opposing sides of the war, Hamon takes an immediate liking to Amuro, seeing him not just as an enemy soldier but as a young man in need of guidance, and she kindly offers to buy him a meal. This maternal yet complex interest in Amuro highlights her depth, placing her alongside Federation officer Matilda Ajan as one of the significant adult figures who influence his perspective on the war.

Hamon’s primary motivation is intrinsically linked to her devotion to Ramba Ral. She follows him to Earth as he is tasked with hunting down the mobile suit carrier White Base, and she manages logistics and coordination from the bridge of their Gallop-class land battleship. When Ral is killed during a desperate boarding action against the White Base, her world collapses, and her purpose shifts entirely from supporting her partner to avenging him. Consumed by grief and a thirst for retribution, she does not care for her own survival. She rallies the remaining members of Ral’s squadron and launches a final, suicidal assault on the White Base, demonstrating that her love for Ral is both her greatest strength and the catalyst for her own tragic end.

Throughout the story, her key relationships define her actions. Her bond with Ramba Ral is the central pillar of her existence, a deep partnership built on mutual respect and shared history. In expanded materials, such as The Origin, their relationship is given further depth, showing that Hamon was a nightclub singer in a Texas Colony who became a trusted operative for the Ral family, a role that also brought her into contact with a young Casval and Artesia Deikun (who would later become Char Aznable and Sayla Mass). Her final, most significant relationship is with the crew of the White Base, specifically Amuro Ray and Ryu Jose. In her desperate final attack, she pilots the turret of a Magella Attack Tank, coming close to destroying the Gundam. Her rampage is only stopped when a mortally wounded Ryu Jose rams his Core Fighter into her craft, killing them both in a fiery explosion that saves the White Base.

As a character, Hamon undergoes a sharp but compelling arc. She transitions from a composed and strategic supporter to a vengeful, shattered woman driven solely by loss. This development underscores the brutal cost of the One Year War, illustrating how it consumes not only frontline soldiers but also those who love them. Regarding her abilities, Hamon is a highly capable strategist and coordinator, adept at managing battlefield communications and logistics. While not a Mobile Suit pilot, she demonstrates notable skill in operating a Magella Attack Tank’s detached top turret as a makeshift fighter, using it to skillfully and almost single-handedly threaten the Federation’s most powerful mobile suit. Her legacy is that of a loyal partner and a formidable, grief-stricken adversary whose actions had a profound impact on the crew of the White Base.
