Description
Katz Kobayashi, originally born Katz Howan, is a character whose journey begins during the One Year War and continues into the Gryps Conflict. He is first introduced as an eight-year-old orphan from Side 7 who, along with two other children, Letz and Kikka, comes aboard the Federation assault carrier White Base as a refugee. During this early period, Katz and his companions act as the ship's mascots and occasional troublemakers, though they prove their courage and resourcefulness in critical moments. They notably assist in disposing of explosive devices planted by Char Aznable during the infiltration of Jaburo, an act that earns them the right to remain with the crew for the remainder of the war. In the final battle at A Baoa Qu, Katz, along with Letz and Kikka, manifests nascent Newtype abilities by psychically reaching out to guide Amuro Ray to the White Base crew's escape lifeboat.

Following the war, Katz and the other orphans are adopted by two former White Base crew members, Hayato Kobayashi and Fraw Bow, and he takes the surname Kobayashi. The family settles on Earth, where Hayato operates a museum featuring mobile suits from the One Year War. It is here that Katz learns the fundamentals of piloting, operating vintage Zeon suits and developing the skills that will later define his role in the conflict to come.

By the time of the Gryps Conflict, Katz has grown into a sixteen-year-old young man whose defining characteristic is a deep, almost obsessive hero worship of Amuro Ray and the other White Base pilots. This admiration fuels a powerful desire to prove himself on the battlefield and follow in their footsteps. However, his personality has developed in a difficult direction, becoming headstrong, reckless, and dangerously overconfident. He is impulsive, often acting on emotion rather than logic, and his judgment is frequently clouded by his personal feelings and his idealized view of war, which clashes sharply with the grim reality he encounters. This combination of traits makes him a problematic and often insubordinate member of the crew, prone to launching without permission and challenging the orders of superiors like Bright Noa.

Katz's role in the story is that of a young, aspiring soldier who joins the anti-Titans faction Karaba on Earth before making his way to space to serve aboard the Argama with the AEUG. His motivations are a blend of idealism, a desire to fight against the oppressive Titans, and a personal quest to earn glory and recognition. He is desperate to prove that he is no longer the child of the White Base, but a capable warrior in his own right. This need for validation often leads him to make poor decisions, such as stealing the Gundam Mk-II for an unauthorized sortie, a mission that nearly gets him killed and results in him crashing the valuable mobile suit.

His most significant and tragic relationship is with Sarah Zabiarov, a young officer of the Titans. The two share a mutual attraction, and Katz becomes infatuated with her, believing he can save her from the influence of the charismatic leader Paptimus Scirocco. This emotional attachment repeatedly compromises his duties, leading him to trust her when he should not and even facilitating her escape back to the enemy. This relationship ultimately leads to a moment of profound trauma when Katz, in his eagerness to shoot down Scirocco, ends up killing Sarah as she throws herself in front of the blast to protect her leader. In the aftermath, consumed by grief and an inability to accept the true cause of her death, he irrationally blames Haman Karn and launches a futile attack against her.

Other key relationships shape his development as well. His idealization of Amuro Ray leads to initial disappointment when he finds his hero living under house arrest and seemingly unwilling to fight, though he later helps Amuro escape and rejoin the battle. His adoptive father, Hayato, serves as a direct authority figure, and their shared impulsive nature leads to friction, especially when Hayato must reprimand Katz for his reckless actions.

Katz's character arc is a cautionary one, demonstrating the dangers of unchecked ambition and emotional immaturity in the brutal context of war. He begins as a hopeful and eager youth but is gradually worn down by his failures, the loss of comrades, and his disastrous romantic entanglement. Unlike the heroes he idolizes, he fails to channel his emotions and Newtype sensitivity into a constructive force. His development is not one of growth into a great pilot, but a spiral of increasingly poor choices that lead directly to his demise.

In terms of abilities, Katz is a competent pilot with foundational skills learned from his time at his father's museum, giving him experience with older mobile suits like the Zaku II. He is capable of piloting modern AEUG machines such as the MSA-003 Nemo and later operates the FXA-05D G-Defenser in a support role for pilots like Emma Sheen. While he shows moments of tactical awareness and has saved comrades like Kamille Bidan on occasion, he lacks the raw talent, spatial awareness, and discipline of true aces like Amuro or Kamille. His nascent Newtype abilities, first glimpsed in his childhood, are weak and unreliable, and he is unable to use them effectively in combat. His most notable failure is perhaps his final one, where, during the intense final battle, he becomes distracted and flies his G-Defenser directly into debris, losing consciousness and leaving himself vulnerable to being shot down by the Titans pilot Yazan Gable.
