Description
Katz Howan, who later becomes known as Katz Kobayashi after being adopted, is a character who appears in the original Mobile Suit Gundam and its sequel, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. He is first introduced during the One Year War as a child refugee, having been orphaned at the age of eight when the Principality of Zeon attacked his home colony of Side 7. He, along with two other orphans, Letz Cofan and Kikka Kitamoto, is evacuated aboard the Earth Federation assault carrier White Base. Despite initial objections from the adult crew, the trio become something of mascots and informal crew members, involving themselves in maintenance tasks and several major combat incidents. One notable occasion involves them thwarting a bomb plot by Char Aznable at the Earth Federation headquarters in Jaburo. After the White Base is destroyed during the final Battle of A Baoa Qu, the three children demonstrate nascent Newtype abilities by psychically reaching out to guide the pilot Amuro Ray to their escape lifeboat.

Following the end of the One Year War, Katz and his two friends are adopted by former White Base crew members Hayato Kobayashi and Fraw Bow. He takes his adoptive father’s surname, becoming Katz Kobayashi, and grows up in a stable home on Earth where Hayato operates a mobile suit museum featuring vintage Zeon suits from the war. By the time of the Gryps Conflict several years later, a teenage Katz has learned to pilot mobile suits by working with the old machines at his father’s museum. He has grown up idolizing the heroic pilots of his childhood, particularly Amuro Ray, and is determined to follow in their footsteps. This idealism is coupled with a personality marked by impulsiveness, recklessness, and a dangerous naivety, traits he shares with his adoptive father.

Motivated by a desire to prove himself and emulate his heroes, Katz leaves his peaceful life behind. He first helps Amuro escape the surveillance of the Earth Federation forces and joins the anti-Titans resistance group known as Karaba. His actions as a pilot are consistently marked by a lack of discipline and a tendency to act on his own emotions. In one instance, he steals the advanced RX-178 Gundam Mk-II, only to crash it and require rescue. Despite being reprimanded, he continues to launch unauthorized sorties, piloting mass-produced MSA-003 Nemo mobile suits and later the FXA-05D G-Defenser support craft. His role in the story often positions him as a supporting pilot to more skilled aces like Emma Sheen, with his aggressive and disobedient nature frequently putting himself and others at risk.

Several key relationships define his path in the story. His decision to become a pilot stems from his deep admiration for Amuro Ray, an ideal he struggles to live up to. His relationship with his adoptive father, Hayato, is strained as Hayato, a veteran pilot himself, constantly criticizes Katz for his reckless behavior and lack of judgment. The most significant and destructive relationship is his romantic infatuation with Sarah Zabiarov, an enemy officer of the Titans. This attraction completely compromises his judgment as a soldier; he repeatedly facilitates her escape from the AEUG, leading to his own detention by his comrades. His unwillingness to see her as an enemy ultimately contributes to the tragedy of her death in battle.

Over the course of the Gryps Conflict, Katz shows very little positive development, with his initial enthusiasm curdling into a dangerous, glory-seeking recklessness that fails to account for his relatively modest piloting abilities. His inability to follow orders, his uncontrolled emotions, and his failure to learn from his mistakes remain constant. In the final battle between the AEUG, the Titans, and the Axis fleet, Katz pilots the G-Defenser to support Emma Sheen. Defying an order to withdraw, he chooses to engage the enemy ace pilot Yazan Gable directly. In a fatal display of his lack of spatial awareness, he loses focus while taunting Yazan and his mobile suit collides with a meteorite, leaving him unconscious and a sitting duck for Yazan to destroy. His death is often viewed as a pointless end to a troubled path, though in some versions of the story, his spirit later appears alongside that of Sarah Zabiarov, finally finding a moment of peace. As a pilot, he possesses fundamental skills and can operate a mobile suit in combat, but his notable abilities are ultimately overshadowed by his poor decision-making and inability to control his reckless impulses.
