Description
Letz Cofan, later known as Letz Kobayashi after his adoption, is a secondary character from the original Mobile Suit Gundam. He is one of three war orphans brought aboard the Earth Federation assault carrier White Base during the One Year War, alongside Katz Hawin and Kikka Kitamoto. Born on the space colony Side 7 in Universal Century 0073, Letz was orphaned at the age of six when the Principality of Zeon attacked his home colony. He and the other surviving children were evacuated on the White Base, where they came under the care of Fraw Bow. Letz is the middle child of the trio and serves as both a mascot and an occasional troublemaker aboard the ship, providing moments of levity during the brutal conflict. Despite his vacant expression, he possesses an underlying energy and an optimistic outlook. His personality is defined by gentleness, loyalty, and a deep desire for stability, traits that contrast him with his more ambitious adoptive brother Katz. Letz forms a strong emotional bond with Fraw Bow, who acts as a mother figure, and he also develops a lasting kinship with Katz and Kikka. Though a civilian, Letz finds himself in the middle of several key events. During Char Aznable’s infiltration of the Federation headquarters at Jaburo, Letz aids in discovering and disposing of hidden bombs, an act of bravery that allows the children to remain aboard the White Base. Later, during the final Battle of A Baoa Qu, Letz demonstrates latent Newtype abilities when he psychically reaches out alongside the other orphans to help Amuro Ray locate the lifeboat carrying the White Base crew. Following the end of the One Year War, Letz, Katz, and Kikka are formally adopted by Hayato Kobayashi and Fraw Bow, who marry to provide the children with a stable home. The family settles on Earth in Shizuoka, where Hayato operates a mobile suit museum. Letz shows no interest in military service or mobile suit piloting, unlike Katz. Instead, he embraces a quiet civilian life, remaining at home with Fraw even as Kikka leaves to pursue journalism in space and Katz joins the military. His post-war choices reflect his emotional maturity and his primary motivation: to preserve the peaceful family life he gained after losing his original parents. Letz grows into a steadfast and dutiful son, maintaining close ties with his adoptive siblings and showing continued affection for them during visits. His latent Newtype abilities, while present, are never developed for combat, underscoring his fundamentally peaceful nature. His notable strengths lie in his loyalty, his adaptability in the face of trauma, and his quiet courage when the safety of those he cares about is threatened.
