Description
Char Aznable, known under the rank of Maggiore (Major) in some depictions, is a central figure whose real name is Casval Rem Deikun. He is the son of Zeon Zum Deikun, the founder of the space colony cluster known as Side 3, which would later become the Principality of Zeon. Following his father's mysterious death, which Casval believes was orchestrated by the Zabi family who usurped power, he and his younger sister Artesia (later known as Sayla Mass) were forced into hiding. To survive and escape the Zabi's murderous pursuit, Casval assumed the identity of his friend, Char Aznable, after a convenient explosion allowed him to fake his own death. He then enrolled in the Zeon military academy, hiding his distinctive blue eyes behind sunglasses to complete the disguise.

Driven by a deep-seated and all-consuming desire for revenge against the Zabi family, Char's personality is a complex blend of charisma, cold calculation, and deep-seated emotional turmoil. He is a natural leader, inspiring fierce loyalty among his subordinates not only through his bravery and tactical brilliance but also by his willingness to lead from the front, often being the first to engage the enemy despite overwhelming odds. This is not reckless abandon but the result of careful planning and rapid adaptation to fluid combat situations. Underneath this composed exterior, however, lies a bitter and manipulative individual. His quest for vengeance fuels his actions, making him capable of great cruelty and betrayal, yet he is also haunted by a sense of loss and a desire to create a better future for Spacenoids, the humans living in space colonies.

Char’s primary role in the story is as the principal antagonist and the arch-rival of the Earth Federation's young pilot, Amuro Ray. He is an ace pilot of the Principality of Zeon, famously nicknamed the Red Comet for his incredible speed and combat prowess, a reputation he solidified by single-handedly destroying five Federation battleships at the Battle of Loum. He relentlessly pursues the Federation warship White Base as it attempts to return to Earth, leading to his first confrontations with the inexperienced Amuro in the technologically superior Gundam. This rivalry quickly evolves into a psychic and personal obsession that defines much of the conflict.

One of Char's most significant acts of treachery occurs when he allies with Garma Zabi, a former academy friend and the youngest son of the ruling Zabi family. While fighting alongside Garma on Earth, Char deliberately lures his trusting comrade into a deadly trap set by the White Base, leading to Garma's death. In Garma's final moments, Char cruelly reveals his betrayal, marking the first successful step in his revenge plan. This act results in his public disgrace and a nominal demotion, but it serves his larger purpose. He is later secretly recruited by Kycilia Zabi, Garma's older sister, who sees value in his skills, placing him in a position to continue his machinations from within the Zabi power structure.

Throughout the war, Char develops several key relationships that further shape him. He shares a complicated bond with his sister, Sayla Mass, who serves as a crew member on the White Base. He protects her from afar while also trying to persuade her to leave the conflict. More profoundly, he discovers and mentors Lalah Sune, a powerful Newtype—a human whose abilities have awakened to greater empathy and spatial awareness. Char develops a deep, almost romantic connection with Lalah, viewing her as a symbol of humanity's potential in space. Her death at the hands of Amuro Ray, while she was trying to protect Char, becomes a pivotal tragedy. It transforms his rivalry with Amuro into a bitter, soul-consuming hatred and leaves a permanent emotional scar. Char himself is a Newtype, though his abilities are often portrayed as being less intuitive or powerful than Amuro's, yet they allow him to form psychic bonds with both his rival and Lalah.

As a character, Char undergoes significant development. He begins as a masked schemer whose entire identity is forged by a need for vengeance. His experiences, particularly the loss of Lalah, cause his focus to shift. By the end of the One Year War, after exacting his final revenge by personally killing a fleeing Kycilia Zabi with a bazooka, he has achieved his original goal, but he is left hollow and purposeless. This emptiness sets the stage for his later appearances, where he adopts new aliases like Quattro Bajeena to fight for broader political ideals, though he remains forever shadowed by his rivalry with Amuro and the ghost of Lalah.

Char’s abilities are legendary. He is an exceptional mobile suit pilot, often customizing his machines in his signature red color. He piloted a succession of powerful Zeon suits, including the MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type, the amphibious MSM-07S Z'Gok, the MS-14S Gelgoog, and the formidable Newtype-use MSN-02 Zeong. Beyond his piloting skill, he is a brilliant strategist, a skilled saboteur, and a charismatic orator capable of inspiring and manipulating people to achieve his goals. His intelligence, bravery, and unorthodox tactics consistently make him a threat far greater than his rank might suggest, earning him the enduring fear and respect of his enemies.
