Description
Momoko Sakura, commonly called Maruko, is a nine-year-old third-grade elementary school student living in the suburban town of Shimizu, Shizuoka Prefecture, in the mid-1970s. She is part of a six-member family that includes her parents, her older sister Sakiko, and her grandparents. The family is not well-off, and Maruko shares a room with her older sister.
Maruko is cheerful and friendly by nature, but she is also lazy, disorganized, and frequently late for school. She often neglects her homework, forgets her school bag, and acts carelessly in everyday tasks. She is not good at mathematics and is regularly scolded by her mother for her lack of responsibility. Her forgetfulness and laid-back attitude sometimes lead to minor misfortunes. Despite these flaws, she is well-intentioned and genuinely cares about the people around her. She can be sensitive and becomes genuinely upset when things go wrong, showing a gentle and emotional side.
Maruko enjoys reading manga and drawing, and she has a particular talent for creating her own manga-style artwork. She aspires to become a manga artist, a singer idol, or a world traveler when she grows up. She is a devoted fan of the popular idol Momoe Yamaguchi and enjoys listening to her songs on television.
As the protagonist of the story, Maruko is the center of everyday episodes that revolve around her small adventures, troubles at home, and interactions with friends and family. Her role is to embody the simple, humorous, and sometimes touching experiences of childhood in a nostalgic Japanese suburban setting.
Her key relationships define much of her behavior. She shares a warm and loving bond with her grandfather Tomozou, who dotes on her and is often indulgent, which Maruko sometimes takes advantage of. Her relationship with her older sister Sakiko is one of frequent sibling squabbles—Sakiko is neat, calm, and responsible, the opposite of Maruko—but Maruko secretly cares for her and will defend her when needed. Her mother Sumire is strict and frequently scolds Maruko for her laziness, while her father Hiroshi is carefree and likes to tease her but loves her deeply. Her grandmother Kotake is frugal and steady, adding another layer of family dynamic. Outside the home, her best friend is Tamae Honami, a wealthy and well-mannered girl who often contrasts with Maruko’s tomboyish and messy tendencies.
Over the course of the series, Maruko shows subtle development. While she consistently remains lazy and forgetful, she learns from her mistakes and occasionally demonstrates responsibility and kindness. She is a well-meaning child who tries to do good, even when her efforts backfire. Her notable abilities include a natural skill for drawing and a knack for creative thinking, though she struggles with academic subjects like math and with following rules. Her cheerful smile and optimistic outlook make her a relatable and endearing character.
