Description
Hiroshi Sakura is the father of the main character, Maruko, and a central member of the Sakura household in the anime Chibi Maruko-chan. He is married to Sumire and has two daughters, the elder being Sakiko and the younger being Maruko. He also lives with his own parents, Tomozo and Kotake. His physical appearance is characterized by short black hair with the front locks swept to the right and a distinct lock of hair left down on the far left side, complemented by visible cheeklines. His typical outfit consists of a long-sleeved orange shirt with brown trousers and brown shoes, switching to a short-sleeved version of the shirt during the summer months.

Hiroshi has a rather lax and free-spirited personality, often spending his time at home engaged in what could be described as lazy activities such as reading the newspaper or watching television. He displays a relaxed parenting style, sometimes opposing his children’s misdeeds but on other occasions supporting them. This particular trait seems to have been passed down to his younger daughter, Maruko, who is also known for being lazy and disorganized. He has a great fondness for drinking sake, both at home and outside, and his primary hobby is fishing. He can often be seen reading books on fishing techniques or cleaning his fishing rod, demonstrating a genuine dedication to the pastime. In contrast to his relaxed home demeanor, Hiroshi has a notably shy nature when faced with strangers or large crowds. On one occasion at a wedding reception, his social anxiety was so severe that he became visibly flustered, messed up his speech, and shook throughout the ordeal.

Within the family structure, Hiroshi’s interactions are varied. He shares a humorous bond with his daughter Maruko, often laughing excessively at the funny stories she tells, though she does not spend as much time with him as she does with her doting grandfather, Tomozo. In early episodes, Hiroshi was depicted as a frequent smoker, but after being confronted about the habit, he was convinced to stop, and later episodes no longer show him smoking. Another consistent and unusual trait is his noted tendency for flatulence, which he performs openly in front of the family in the living room and, according to the manga, even uses to keep himself warm in bed. He is also known to be a horse race supervisor.

Regarding his role in the story, Hiroshi serves as a grounding figure within the Sakura family, representing a typical, realistic portrayal of a Japanese father. His character contributes to the comedic dynamics of the series, often through his clashes with Maruko over her picky eating habits, such as her dislike for natto, which he once claimed was an embarrassment to Japan. While he can be self-centered and speak sharply, he is not a villainous figure but rather a source of everyday humor and conflict. His financial and household responsibilities largely fall to his wife Sumire, as he rarely helps with chores and prefers to laze around the kotatsu, though he once won a car in a lottery and took the family on a trip, even if his driving caused everyone else considerable anxiety.

His personal likes and dislikes are well-defined. His favorite foods include katsuo sashimi, boiled fish, ramen, and kakigōri with milk, while he strongly dislikes gratin dishes and sweets. His preferred singers are Hibari Misora and Mina Aoe. Through his consistent portrayal as a lazy, sake-loving, fishing-obsessed father who struggles in social situations but is a permanent fixture in his family's daily chaos, Hiroshi Sakura remains an essential and beloved character in the series.
