Description
Dokter Z, known as Dokter Sonoida in Japanese media, is the primary antagonist of the initial story arc. Hailing from 2126, his past includes adopting the Alpha Trio—Ursula, Zander, and Ed—and fathering Rod and Laura after taking them from an orphanage, raising them all without a recorded marriage. This period showcased a more benevolent side of his character.

His story begins with Dr. Ancient's mission to rescue dinosaurs via time travel from the Mesozoic era. Departing on Christmas Day 2127, Dokter Z secretly manipulated the collected dinosaurs for combat, developed Move Cards covertly, and raised powerful "Secret Dinosaurs." During the return trip to the future, he sabotaged the timeship's course, causing it to crash in the present day and scatter dinosaur cards worldwide. This crash also stranded baby Rex and his guardian Jonathan twelve years earlier.

Operating from the artificial island Zeta Point (later revealed as the disguised timeship Backlander), he typically assigned field missions to the Alpha Trio while focusing on inventions, card research, and early card detection using dinosaur bone chants. His technological creations provided vehicles and equipment for the Alpha Gang, though they frequently malfunctioned or were single-use. Despite building the robotic maid Helga from a future kit, he lacked the programming knowledge to repair her malfunctions.

His personality exhibits extreme egotism, a short temper, stubbornness, and an unwillingness to accept blame. He is also stingy and possessive, claiming desired objects and avoiding unnecessary spending. Attempts to assert authority over Helga are easily quelled by her stern looks. Echoes of his earlier kindness surface during encounters with his Secret Dinosaurs—whom he raised, sometimes poorly—and when his grandchildren Rod or Laura are endangered, though his anticipated joyful reunions with the dinosaurs usually end in them fleeing or attacking him.

Key field missions involved retrieving his Secret Dinosaurs (episodes 14, 28, 34), securing the Dinomond Amber in New York, and confronting Alpha Gang doppelgangers. He occasionally summoned dinosaurs himself, preferring Terry (Tyrannosaurus) or Spiny (Spinosaurus). A back injury from lifting Alpha Metal ore briefly sidelined him, though he joined the Kyoto mission upon recovery, ostensibly to find the final dinosaur card.

The first season finale revealed his mutiny against Dr. Ancient and Dr. Cretacia (Rex's parents). Fearing removal from the mission, he ejected their pods mid-flight, contributing to the crash. Later, his comrade Seth betrayed him first, expelling him from Zeta Point. This forced an alliance with the D-Team to counter Seth's Black T. rex threat in Sanjo City. After Rex saved him from the dinosaur, he apologized for harming Rex's parents—his first act of remorse. He assisted in summoning Terry, Saurophaganax, and Daspletosaurus to battle the Black T. rex and attempted to ride Pachycephalosaurus, only to be thrown off and rescued by the Alpha Trio. Post-victory, Drs. Ancient and Cretacia were found in stasis aboard the Backlander, possibly rescued by him out of hidden guilt before the crash.

In the second season, he initially reverted to antagonism in the Cretaceous, using Terry to attack wild dinosaurs. After joining the D-Team against the Spectral Space Pirates, he provided strategic contributions: developing counters to Spectral Armor, creating enhanced Move Cards, and inventing Element Boosters that enabled DinoTector Armor. His activities spanned historical eras:
- In Ancient Rome, he analyzed Torvosaurus' Spectral Armor and deployed new tech.
- In the Caribbean, he aided against Gabbro's dinosaurs, adopting a "Whitebeard" pirate persona aboard the Alpha Pirate Ship and demanding the title during naval battles.
- In Ancient China, he suffered time-travel sickness, hunted dinosaurs, and repeatedly impersonated Sanzo Hoshi's group, resulting in village expulsions after failed attempts to harvest the Fruit of Eternal Life.
- In Ancient Persia, treasure theft led to capture by the 40 Thieves, imprisonment as leverage against the Alpha Trio, and eventual rescue by Aladdin.
His role diminished in later episodes, often staying aboard the Backlander or delegating tasks while managing side antics.
