Description
Megane, whose real name is Satoshi, is a Tomobiki High School student instantly recognizable by his round glasses, which are the source of his nickname, as "megane" is the Japanese word for eyewear. He is the intensely idiosyncratic and self-appointed Supreme Council Chairman of Lum's Stormtroopers, the devoted fan club dedicated to the beautiful alien girl Lum. Alongside his friends Chibi, Perm, and Kakugari, Megane has known the protagonist Ataru Moroboshi since kindergarten. However, the arrival of Lum transformed their dynamic; while they were once simply friends, they became bitter rivals for her affection, though they still occasionally spend leisure time together at local gyūdon beef bowl restaurants and soba noodle stands.
Megane's personality is a volatile mixture of manic obsession and surprising common sense. He is a self-described otaku with a pronounced fixation on military regalia, particularly that of Nazi Germany, which heavily influences the theatrical and hysterical speeches he often delivers. He can become intensely emotional, screaming at the top of his lungs and working himself into a frenzy, only to calm down moments later with a startling degree of rationality. This duality makes him both a bombastic loudmouth and, at times, the voice of reason within his chaotic group. Despite his overwhelming love for Lum, he is also a dedicated intellectual and aesthete; he is shown to be well-educated with an impressive understanding of poetry, history, mythology, philosophy, and science fiction, and he is even writing a book titled History of Tomobiki. His primary motivation is to win Lum's heart or, failing that, to protect her purity from the lecherous Ataru, concocting numerous schemes to gain her attention and break up their relationship. While he initially served as a nuisance to Lum, over time she comes to trust him more, addressing him respectfully as Megane-san.
In the narrative, Megane acts as the driving force behind many school-wide plots and the leader of Lum's Stormtroopers, making him a significant source of comedic conflict and commentary. His role is much more pronounced in the anime adaptation than in the original manga, where his counterpart appears only briefly. His most notable relationships are with his fellow stormtroopers, whom he must constantly keep in line, and with Ataru, whom he views as both a sworn enemy and a childhood friend. Later in the series, he demonstrates a mechanical aptitude, building two homemade heavy-duty armored suits, the M HMS-01 and M HMS-02, to fight powerful foes. Although these suits prove largely ineffective in combat, they are durable enough to protect him from what would otherwise be lethal explosions and injuries. He is also the only human character shown eating food prepared by Lum without adverse effects, a testament to his unwavering devotion. One of his key abilities is his eloquent and verbose speaking style, often delivering grandiose speeches filled with historical and philosophical references, such as quoting the 1945 surrender speech of Emperor Hirohito to emphasize the "unbearable" suffering of seeing Lum in love with Ataru.
