Description
Pepe Benengeli is a Spanish professional cyclist from Andalusia, racing as a support rider for Team Pao Pao Beer in the Vuelta a España. His duty is aiding the team leader, not seeking personal glory. The race coincides with his return to his hometown on the very day his former girlfriend, Carmen, marries his elder brother, Ángel. This event ignites existing resentment, stemming from Carmen and Ángel beginning their clandestine relationship while Pepe fulfilled his military service.

Pepe's cycling passion originated from his uncle Ribera's enthusiasm for bicycles, inspiring both brothers during their youth. His departure from Andalusia, however, created friction with locals like Hernández, a bar owner who accuses Pepe of abandoning his roots despite supporting his ambitions. His best friend, Frankie, remains in Andalusia but lives vicariously through Pepe's career.

During the Vuelta, Pepe overhears his sponsor planning to terminate his contract after the race. Facing unemployment and no prospects for the next season, he defies team orders and races for victory. This defiance intertwines with his unresolved bitterness towards Ángel and Carmen, driving him to prove himself both professionally and personally.

Later, Pepe participates in the Japan Cup Cycle Road Race with his team. His actions during the Vuelta a España, particularly his victorious finish and defiant celebration brandishing a pickled eggplant—a symbolic hometown delicacy—mark his reconnection to his Andalusian identity amidst professional crisis.
