Description
Kotomi Takanashi is a supporting character in the anime adaptation of DNA². She is a high school student and a close friend and classmate of Ami Kurimoto, the childhood friend of protagonist Junta Momonari. In terms of appearance, Kotomi has medium-length black hair and brown eyes and generally wears the standard school uniform.
Kotomi carries a very specific and embarrassing personal quirk that mirrors Junta's own problem with girls: she involuntarily releases gas whenever she becomes nervous or flustered. This trait makes her self-conscious and shy, and it shapes much of her initial personality. She is often quiet and reserved, but beneath that exterior she is gentle, caring, and loyal to the people close to her. She tends to be introverted and bookish in demeanor, though she will open up once she trusts someone.
The driving motivation behind many of Kotomi's actions is a mix of a desire to overcome her nervous condition and a growing romantic interest in Junta. When the two discover each other's odd reactions to stress and attraction, they begin spending time together in hopes of curing themselves. Through these interactions, Kotomi develops genuine feelings for Junta, which are further intensified by the unpredictable effects of his Mega-Playboy DNA. She wants to be helpful to him, often putting his well-being ahead of her own comfort.
Within the story, Kotomi serves as both comic relief and a sympathetic supporter. Her relationship with Ami is one of mutual trust and friendship, and she sometimes acts as a bridge between Ami and the increasingly complicated situation around Junta. Her bond with Junta is driven by empathy over their shared social embarrassment and evolves into a one-sided crush that influences some of the lighter romantic tangles. She is not directly involved in the main battles or confrontations, but her presence adds emotional nuance to the group dynamic.
Over the course of the series, Kotomi shows gradual personal development. By confronting her nervousness alongside Junta, she becomes somewhat more outgoing and willing to take small risks for the sake of her friends. Although she does not undergo a dramatic transformation, her confidence inches forward, and her loyalty to both Ami and Junta remains steadfast even when the situation grows chaotic.
In terms of notable abilities, Kotomi is academically inclined and is said to be very talented in gymnastics. Her physical coordination and agility stand in contrast to her otherwise timid nature, hinting at a hidden strength that she seldom has the opportunity to display.
