TV-Series
Description
Dorothy Catalonia is a pivotal character in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, distinguished by her aristocratic bearing, sharp intellect, and a philosophy that directly challenges the series' central theme of pacifism. She is introduced as a student at a school in the Sanc Kingdom, where she appears to admire the pacifist teachings of Relena Peacecraft. However, this is a carefully constructed facade, as Dorothy is secretly a spy for the Romefeller Foundation, the powerful military-industrial organization that influences Earth's politics. Her true loyalties are rooted in her prestigious family; she is the granddaughter of Duke Dermail Catalonia, the head of the Romefeller Foundation, and the daughter of General Chilias Catalonia, the former commander-in-chief of the OZ military force.

Personality is the most defining aspect of Dorothy Catalonia. She serves as the ideological antithesis to Relena Peacecraft. While Relena advocates for total pacifism and the complete renunciation of war, Dorothy argues that conflict is an intrinsic and necessary part of human nature. She frequently makes provocative statements in praise of battle, claiming it brings out the strong and beautiful nature of humanity. However, this warlike persona is not her complete truth. Underneath her cynical smile and calculated rhetoric is a deeply traumatized individual. The death of her father in a war when she was young instilled in her a profound hatred for conflict. Her aggressive ideology is, in reality, a psychological defense mechanism and a grand strategy: she believes that by orchestrating a truly terrible and tragic war, the horror of it would sear itself into the collective memory of humanity, making them loathe violence so completely that they would never resort to it again. This makes her a tragic figure, hiding insecurity and loneliness behind a mask of strength.

Throughout the story, Dorothy maneuvers to make this stark vision a reality. After the Sanc Kingdom falls, she helps orchestrate Relena's rise as a symbolic Queen of the World, manipulating her grandfather and the Romefeller Foundation for her own ends. When the conflict moves into space, she aligns herself with Zechs Merquise, who has adopted his birth name, Milliardo Peacecraft, and leads the insurrectionist group White Fang. Dorothy becomes Milliardo's trusted second-in-command, drawn to his strength and his willingness to wage a massive final battle. Her most significant power is demonstrated when she is given control of the ZERO System, a powerful tactical computer that predicts future events. Her mental fortitude allows her to master the system's potentially sanity-shattering data, and she uses it to remotely command an army of Virgo II mobile dolls with terrifying efficiency, nearly overwhelming the Gundam pilots.

Key relationships define Dorothy's actions and reveal her interiority. Her relationship with Relena is one of rivalry and observation; she respects Relena's conviction even as she seeks to prove her ideals are naive. Her dynamic with Quatre Raberba Winner is particularly intense. When their two ZERO Systems resonate, she psychically senses him as her equal and antagonist, leading to a direct confrontation. In their final battle aboard the space fortress Libra, she challenges him to a fencing duel. It is during this fight that her mask slips, and she confesses her true hatred for the war that took her father, demonstrating that her love of battle is a self-deception. She manages to wound Quatre, but is ultimately stopped by Trowa Barton and forced to flee as Libra is destroyed.

Dorothy's character undergoes significant development by the series' conclusion and its sequel film, Endless Waltz. After the war ends, she is seen paying respects at Milliardo's grave, indicating a sense of closure and reflection. During the Mariemaia Army's coup in Endless Waltz, Dorothy plays an unexpected role as a catalyst for the people. She publicly taunts the frightened citizens of Brussels, calling them passive dogs, but her harsh words are designed to incite them to action. She then helps them by providing transportation to stand up to the rebel army, effectively weaponizing the public's will for peace. This act shows a maturation of her tactics, moving from direct military engagement to strategic manipulation for a peaceful outcome. In the later serial novel Frozen Teardrop, her transformation is complete, as she has become the President of the Earth Sphere Unified Nation, demonstrating that her intelligence and leadership skills have finally been channeled into legitimate governance.

Beyond her political and tactical acumen, Dorothy possesses several notable abilities. She is a skilled orator and negotiator, able to sway powerful figures like the old men of the Romefeller Foundation with her eloquence. She is also highly proficient in fencing, a skill that allows her to physically challenge and wound Quatre, who is a Gundam pilot. However, her most remarkable capability is her mental resilience, which enables her to use the ZERO System without breaking down, marking her as one of the few characters in the series with the willpower to control such a dangerous piece of technology.
