TV-Series
Description
Doctor J, whose real name is Jay Null, is the eccentric engineer responsible for creating the Wing Gundam and serves as the mentor to the pilot Heero Yuy. His physical appearance is marked by technological aids, including tight-fitting eye lenses, leg braces, and a prosthetic arm, all necessary due to severe injuries sustained before the series' events. He is widely recognized as an expert in the field of beam weaponry.

In his earlier years, Doctor J was a university friend of the original pacifist leader Heero Yuy and was involved in anti-Alliance activities, during which he lost his arm in a bombing. Professionally, he was one of the scientists who designed the OZ-00MS Tallgeese, one of the first mobile suits. He eventually left the Alliance after it began oppressing the space colonies. He and four other scientists were later recruited by Dekim Barton to construct the five Gundams for Operation Meteor, a plan to drop a colony on Earth. However, Doctor J and his colleagues disagreed with this genocidal intent and secretly modified the operation, sending the Gundams to Earth to specifically target the military forces of the Alliance and OZ.

Doctor J is arguably the most eccentric of the five Gundam scientists, known for making unusual remarks. Despite his odd demeanor, he is deeply devoted to the destruction of OZ and maintaining the legacy of his murdered friend, the original Heero Yuy. He shares a complex, almost uncle-like relationship with the Gundam pilot he trained and named Heero Yuy. While he is immensely proud of Heero's abilities and famously refers to him as a weapon, he also encourages the young man to choose his own fate and shows genuine concern that his training not strip away Heero's humanity. His motivations are driven by a strong moral compass; he rejected the mass murder of the original Operation Meteor and even halted development on the powerful Wing Gundam Zero due to the dangers posed by its ZERO System.

Throughout the story, Doctor J works from the shadows, guiding Heero and providing support. After being captured by OZ with the other scientists, he was forced to develop new mobile suits but secretly worked to upgrade the hidden Gundams. Later, when captured by the White Fang, he and the other scientists sabotaged the space battleship Libra, installing a glitch in its main cannon that would cause it to damage itself with every shot. During the final battle of the series, he was last seen sacrificing himself to prevent Libra from falling to Earth, though later works suggest he survived.

Doctor J's key relationships include his fatherly bond with Heero Yuy, whom he discovered as a lost boy and gave a purpose. He also shares a deep, formative friendship with the original pacifist leader Heero Yuy, whose assassination inspired his rebellion. He frequently works in concert with the other four Gundam scientists, Professor G, Instructor H, Doctor S, and Master O, acting as a collective unit to oppose their enemies.

His notable abilities are primarily in engineering and robotics. Beyond creating the transformable Wing Gundam and its powerful Buster Rifle, his expertise in robotics allowed him to perform complex acts of sabotage undetected. He also has early experience with the dangerous ZERO System, having helped create a mobile armor that contained its prototype form.
