Description
Kid Salsamille is a fictional character from the anime After War Gundam X. Despite being only twelve years old, he serves as the chief mechanic of the battleship Freeden under the command of Jamil Neate. Possessing brown hair and blue eyes, he is a self-described genius who more than lives up to the title through his extraordinary talent for mechanical and mobile suit engineering. He is the leader of the ship's mechanic team, with two older mechanics, Nine and Rococo, acting as his devoted apprentices who respectfully call him Chief.
Personality wise, Kid is a peculiar mix of professional dedication and childish immaturity. When it comes to his work, he has a strong sense of professionalism and takes immense pride in his abilities, to the point of continuing his duties for days without sleep even as his assistants collapse from exhaustion. He becomes completely absorbed when discussing mobile suit modifications and improvements, speaking passionately without rest. However, he is also prone to childish pranks and mischief. He has an impulsive habit of tinkering with mobile suits on his own, which sometimes gets him into trouble. His professional pride makes him look down on those who do not fulfill their responsibilities, as seen in his early interactions with the protagonist Garrod Ran, whom he dismissively called Gundam Boy.
Kid's primary motivation is his passion for mechanics and his drive to see the machines he maintains perform at their best. He is constantly thinking about upgrades and new equipment, even when the ship is not in immediate danger, simply because he enjoys the work and wants to improve the mobile suits capabilities. His professional pride ensures that he will never abandon a task until it is completed to the highest standard he can achieve.
In the story, Kid occupies the crucial role of keeping the Freeden's aging mobile suits operational. His technical knowledge allows him to maintain the fifteen year old Gundams in prime condition using salvaged parts he collects during the ships missions. He is directly responsible for many of the key upgrades the team receives. After the Gundam X is severely damaged, he uses his collection of spare parts to rebuild and upgrade it into the Gundam X Divider, replacing its unreliable satellite cannon with a more versatile beam shield and launcher. Later, with the aid of technicians from the People's Republic of Estard, he oversees the upgrades of the Gundam Airmaster into the Airmaster Burst and the Gundam Leopard into the Leopard Destroy, ensuring the team can keep pace with newer enemy mobile suits. He is also responsible for tuning the G-Falcon support fighter to increase its power output and compatibility with the upgraded Gundams. His technical expertise is not limited to mechanical work, as he also participates in gun battles to defend the Freeden, proving himself a capable fighter when necessary.
Key relationships shape his development throughout the series. His initial relationship with Garrod Ran is antagonistic, as Kid views the young pilot as an amateur who does not deserve to pilot the Gundam. However, as Garrod repeatedly proves his courage, skill, and dedication in battle, Kid grows to respect him as a comrade, even if he continues to use the nickname Gundam Boy as a term of familiarity rather than insult. Kid also forms a strong rapport with fellow mechanic Pala Sys, as the two have similar personalities and become a pair of troublemakers who get along very well. His relationship with his employer Jamil Neate is one of professional trust, with Jamil relying heavily on Kid's judgment for all technical matters concerning the ship and its mobile suits.
Throughout the series, Kid demonstrates notable character development. He begins as a arrogant boy who believes his technical genius places him above others, particularly those who do not share his dedication. His early contempt for Garrod stems from this attitude. However, as he witnesses the struggles and growth of the crew around him, he matures. He learns to trust and rely on his comrades, acknowledging that piloting skill and courage are as valuable as technical knowledge. By the end of the story, his professionalism is tempered with genuine camaraderie, and he fights alongside his friends in the final battles of the 8th Space War.
Following the conclusion of the war, Kid Salsamille opens his own repair shop and salvage yard named Freeden III, bringing together several of his former crewmates including Shingo Mori, Nine, Rococo, and Pala Sys to work with him in this new venture.
