Description
Carris Nautilus is a young man from the post-apocalyptic world of After War Gundam X, notable for being created as an artificial Newtype. He resides in the settlement of Fort Severn in North America, where he serves as one of its leading defenders. Born sometime after the catastrophic colony drop that ended the 7th Space War, Carris grew up in a harsh and dangerous environment. His desire to gain the power necessary to protect the people of his settlement led him to willingly participate in an experiment conducted by the scientist Nomoa Long, transforming him into an artificial Newtype. At approximately fifteen years of age, Carris is a slender boy of short stature with fair hair and blue eyes.
His personality is defined by a deep-seated kindness and a genuine wish to create peace and protect others. Carris is serious, honest, and straightforward in his actions, believing that the power he has obtained will allow him to achieve his goals. Despite his good intentions, his obedience to Nomoa Long, whom he trusts, leads him to carry out questionable orders that bring him into conflict with the protagonists of the story.
Carris initially believes that Newtypes are only artificially created beings, a falsehood perpetuated by Nomoa Long. This belief shapes his motivations and actions, as he sees himself as a necessary tool for bringing order to a chaotic world. He is driven by a strong sense of duty and responsibility toward the people of Fort Severn, and he is willing to make great personal sacrifices for what he believes is the greater good. However, this resolve is shattered upon discovering that natural Newtypes like Tiffa Adill exist, which forces him to confront the possibility that his transformation and the sacrifices it entailed might have been unnecessary.
In the story, Carris first appears as an antagonist who captures Tiffa and engages the Freeden's mobile suits. His piloting skill is formidable; he single-handedly defeats Garrod Ran, Witz Sou, and Roybea Loy, severely damaging the original Gundam X in the process. He pilots the advanced mobile suit Bertigo, and as an artificial Newtype, he has the ability to control remote weapons known as bits, granting him a significant advantage in combat. This artificial enhancement, however, comes with a severe flaw: Carris regularly suffers from intense neurological pain known as Synapse Syndrome, which can incapacitate him at critical moments.
A key relationship is with Nomoa Long, his creator. Carris is ultimately forced to read Nomoa's mind, learning the truth that his mentor is a warmonger who only seeks destruction and was merely using him as a tool. This devastating realization leads Carris to a state of suicidal despair. In his second battle with Garrod, he deliberately tries to be killed, but Garrod refuses and instead appeals to his humanity, successfully reasoning with him.
Garrod Ran is central to Carris’s development. Carris initially looks down on Garrod for being a natural human but grows to respect him after being defeated by his ingenuity and skill. Garrod's persistent attempts at friendship and his refusal to give up on Carris become the catalyst for Carris's redemption. Similarly, he feels a strong affinity for Tiffa Adill when he first meets her, as he recognizes her as a fellow Newtype, though he is shocked to learn she is natural-born. Later, he and Tiffa become friends, and he supports her relationship with Garrod without any jealousy.
Following his rescue from Nomoa Long's plans, Carris remains at Fort Severn to help rebuild the settlement that had been destroyed. He later joins the North American Resistance Force against the New United Nations Earth. In a decisive act of loyalty, he comes to the aid of the Freeden's crew, rescuing them from an execution squad. He then joins them in commandeering a spaceship, which he names the Freeden II, and travels into space to participate in the final conflict of the 8th Space War.
By the end of the series, Carris has completed his journey from a manipulated child soldier to a self-determined young man and a reliable ally. He is present at the lunar facility D.O.M.E. when the true origins of Newtypes are revealed. Deeply affected by these revelations, he ultimately chooses to leave Garrod and Tiffa to embark on his own solitary journey, wishing to contemplate the meaning of what he has learned. His path continues beyond the series, as he eventually becomes an agent for a reorganized New Earth Federation, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to public order and peace in the aftermath of the war.
