Yūko Mizutani
Description
Yūko Mizutani was a highly respected Japanese voice actress, narrator, and singer born on November 4, 1964, in Ama District, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Her career in the entertainment industry spanned over three decades, beginning in 1985 and continuing until her death in 2016. Throughout her prolific career, Mizutani was known for bringing a wide array of characters to life, ranging from young heroines and comedic sidekicks to more serious and mysterious figures.
Mizutani made her debut in 1985 in the seminal mecha anime Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, where she voiced the character Sarah Zabiarov. This role marked the start of a long and varied career in anime. Her early popularity grew significantly following her performances as Leina Stol in Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos and Apple in the science fiction series Zillion. She later took on the starring role of Hiromi Oka in the Aim for the Ace! 2 project in 1988.
Over the years, Mizutani became associated with several iconic and beloved characters. She was perhaps best known for her long-running roles in major franchises. Beginning in 1990, she voiced Sakiko Sakura, the elder sister of the protagonist, in the long-running family comedy Chibi Maruko-chan, a role she continued to play for over 25 years. She also became synonymous with the character Pinoko, the energetic and loyal assistant to the titular genius surgeon in the Black Jack franchise, a role she originated in an OVA in 1993 and later reprised for television series and films. Her portrayal of the clumsy but well-meaning Galaxy Police officer Mihoshi Kuramitsu in the Tenchi Muyo! series, beginning in 1992, further cemented her status as a fan favorite.
Her voice was also a familiar presence in many other hit series. She voiced Sora Takenouchi, one of the original DigiDestined children, in the immensely popular Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02. In the English-speaking world, she was also recognized as the Japanese voice for the character Marie in the classic adventure series Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water. Her other notable roles include Luchs in the Saber Marionette J series, the Great Will of the Macrocosm in the surreal comedy Excel Saga, and Miyuki Aiba (Tekkaman Rapier) in Tekkaman Blade. She even lent her voice to the character of Minnie Mouse as the official Japanese voice for the Disney character starting in 1991. Her talent extended to video games as well, where she voiced characters like Excellen Browning in the long-running Super Robot Wars series.
Yūko Mizutani passed away from breast cancer on May 17, 2016, at the age of 51. Her death was a significant loss to the anime community, and the many characters she voiced left behind a rich and enduring legacy. Following her passing, her long-standing roles were inherited by other actresses, such as Aya Endō taking over as the voice of Minnie Mouse and Machiko Toyoshima assuming the role of Sakiko Sakura in Chibi Maruko-chan.
