Description
Reiko Minami, a teacher residing in Tokyo, becomes the focal point of Matsutarō Sakaguchi’s romantic aspirations. Her move to the city drives him to enlist in the nearby Raijin sumo stable, where he vows to marry her only after attaining the rank of yokozuna. Her familial ties—a mother and uncle portrayed briefly—and her profession form the extent of her disclosed background, positioning her as a symbolic anchor for Matsutarō’s early ambitions.
When an arranged marriage emerges for Reiko, Matsutarō impulsively declares his feelings, only to face rejection. This pivotal moment plunges him into emotional instability, shaping his later resolve to prioritize sumo over unrequited romance. Their interactions, including a reckless kidnapping attempt during his drunken outbursts, expose his immaturity and fuel the tension between them.
Though Reiko’s influence propels Matsutarō’s transformation from impulsive youth to dedicated wrestler, her own perspective and desires remain peripheral to the narrative. She exists largely as an emblematic figure, her presence steering his journey without substantive exploration of her individuality beyond catalyzing his growth.
