Description
Garrod Ran was born in a North American shelter in the year After War 00, a time when the world was still recovering from the catastrophic Seventh Space War. His father, a military technician, was killed in that conflict, and his mother died while he was still very young. The harsh post-war environment shaped his early life; during his years in the shelter, nearly fifty percent of his childhood playmates perished. It was not until After War 0005, when the nuclear winter finally ended, that Garrod saw the sun for the first time. He learned to repair machinery to survive, a skill he humbly attributed to his father's bloodline. After a wandering mobile suit pilot destroyed his village, Garrod abandoned his dream of becoming a mechanic and resolved to live fiercely in a world defined by the law of the jungle, eventually becoming a well-known Mobile Suit hunter and moving to the town of Saint Lanje.

At fifteen years old, Garrod stands at 161cm tall with deep green hair and emerald green eyes. His personality is a complex mix of traits forged by a solitary survivalist existence. Initially, he is immature, shrewd, deeply distrustful of others, and ill-suited to teamwork, often acting impulsively and causing trouble for those around him. He has a conscience but learned from a young age to look out for himself above all else, relying on his resourceful intelligence to get by. Despite this hardened exterior, he possesses a passionate and不服输 (never-give-up) spirit. He can be cheeky and hot-headed, but his defining characteristic is his immense courage and determination when someone he cares about is in danger.

His life and motivations are completely transformed upon meeting Tiffa Adill, a young Newtype girl. Hired to kidnap her, Garrod instead finds himself sympathizing with her as another person constantly bullied and used by others, and falls deeply in love with her at first sight. Protecting Tiffa from the countless adults who wish to exploit her Newtype abilities becomes the central drive of his actions, compelling him to pilot the Gundam X and later risk his life to defy the tragic futures she often foresees. His love for her is the force that pushes him to mature and gives him the strength to face overwhelming odds.

Garrod's central role in the story begins as an outsider who stumbles into the crew of the Freeden, a Vulture ship. Initially joining only to stay close to Tiffa, his inability to adapt to group life causes friction, and he even attempts to leave and sell the Gundam. However, through his repeated battles to protect Tiffa, he gradually bonds with the crew. His most significant relationship is with Tiffa Adill, whose quiet presence and faith in him soften his cynical heart and give him a purpose beyond mere survival. He also clashes with and eventually earns the grudging respect of experienced pilots like Witz Sou and Roybea Loy. The captain of the Freeden, Jamil Neate, serves as a mentor figure, recognizing Garrod's potential and teaching him hard lessons about responsibility and confidence. His primary antagonists include the Frost Brothers, who envy his position, and various forces from the New United Nations Earth and the Space Revolutionary Army who seek to use Tiffa's powers for their own ends.

Throughout the series, Garrod undergoes significant development. He begins as a lone wolf who rejects the idea of becoming a Mobile Suit pilot after witnessing its dangers firsthand. Through his bond with Tiffa and his experiences on the Freeden, he matures into a reliable, trusting, and competent individual who understands the weight of his responsibilities. He evolves a tactical mind, using time between battles to strategize, and his worldview expands from focusing solely on Tiffa to desiring to help bring peace to a war-torn world. Despite setbacks, such as experiencing defeat while trying to protect the small nation of Estard, he constantly learns and adapts. By the end of the Eighth Space War, Garrod has fought to end the cycle of conflict, and with Tiffa, he chooses to leave the Vulture life behind to forge a new, peaceful future together.

Garrod possesses several notable abilities that make him a formidable protagonist despite not being a Newtype. He is an experienced thief with skills in espionage, lock picking, and safe cracking. His Mobile Suit piloting abilities, however, are his most prominent talent. While his skills are initially raw, he possesses an extraordinarily high degree of natural instinct and adaptability, which Jamil Neate describes as a genius for piloting that allows him to quickly master new equipment and situations even under intense pressure. He learns through practical experience and intense focus, eventually becoming highly skilled. He also has a minor but evolving technical knowledge of mobile suit mechanics, likely inherited from his father. His greatest strength is his unshakeable will to defy a seemingly predetermined tragic future, a resolve powerful enough to even alter Tiffa's Newtype visions.
