Description
Elder Toguro is a major antagonist who appears throughout several story arcs, making him one of the longest-lasting villains in the series. He is a human who, along with his younger brother, chose to transform into a demon to gain immortality and greater power.
Fifty years before the main events of the story, Elder Toguro, his younger brother, and a woman named Genkai ran a martial arts dojo together. Their lives were shattered when a demon named Kairen attacked, killing all of their students. Seeking revenge, the Toguro brothers and Genkai entered the Dark Tournament. After they won and defeated Kairen, the two brothers used their prize to wish to be transformed into powerful, ageless demons.
In the present day, Elder Toguro works as a mercenary alongside his brother. He is first seen in the service of the crime lord Tarukane, where he and his brother lead the Apparition Gang. When the protagonist Yusuke Urameshi and his friends attack Tarukane's compound, Elder Toguro demonstrates his powers by transforming his own body into a sword and shield for his brother to use in battle.
Elder Toguro plays a much larger role during the Dark Tournament, where his team faces the protagonists in the final round. He is a sadistic and cruel individual who derives great pleasure from the physical and psychological torture of his opponents. Unlike his younger brother, who is bound by a strict code of honor, Elder Toguro is a liar and a cheater who holds no respect for his enemies, often tormenting them for no reason other than his own amusement. One of his most despicable acts is when he uses a crude puppet show to inform Kuwabara of Genkai's death, cruelly mocking her memory and causing immense emotional distress to Yusuke and his friends. This act even angers his usually stoic younger brother. In the tournament, Elder Toguro fights Kuwabara. His shape-shifting abilities and regenerative powers initially give him a massive advantage, but Kuwabara ultimately wins the match by using a spiritual sword that can change shape to flatten Toguro. Elder Toguro survives the match by liquefying his body and later offers to become a weapon for his brother in the final fight. However, his younger brother, disgusted by Elder Toguro's dishonorable actions, especially the mockery of Genkai, refuses the offer and kicks him out of the arena.
Elder Toguro returns in the subsequent Chapter Black arc, now working for the rogue Spirit Detective Shinobu Sensui. He is "eaten" by a psychic named Gourmet, but his incredible regenerative ability allows him to survive and take control of Gourmet's body, assimilating his powers in the process. He eventually confronts the fox demon Kurama. With full control over his own body, Elder Toguro believes he is unkillable. However, Kurama proves him wrong. Kurama uses a plant called the Sinning Tree, which traps Toguro and forces him to endlessly regenerate while suffering through a hallucination of his worst nightmare for all eternity. This unique fate means that, while not technically dead, he is imprisoned in a state of perpetual torment.
Physically, Elder Toguro has a gaunt, elderly appearance with snow-white skin, long, unkempt gray hair parted down the middle, and long, pointed fingernails. He is significantly smaller than his hulking younger brother and is often seen riding on his brother's shoulder.
Elder Toguro's primary ability is complete bodily manipulation, which functions as a form of immortality. He can reshape any part of his body into a weapon, such as elongating his fingers into spikes or transforming his whole body into a sword. He can also rearrange his internal organs at will, moving his heart or brain to different parts of his body to avoid fatal attacks. He can even liquify his entire form to escape being crushed. His regeneration is so powerful that he can fully recover from being flattened or blown apart. As a demon, he also stopped aging fifty years ago. After taking over Gourmet's body, he also gains access to his abilities, including reading the minds of others.
