Description
Natsumi Tsujimoto is a patrol officer in the anime You're Under Arrest, assigned to the fictional Bokuto Police Station in Tokyo's Sumida Ward. Born on August 12, 1975, she grew up in the Asakusa area before entering the Metropolitan Police Department Academy, where she was a classmate of Miyuki Kobayakawa. The two did not become partners through an official assignment; Natsumi first met Miyuki when she was running late on her first day of duty at Bokuto and took a series of shortcuts, prompting Miyuki to chase her down and issue her a citation. They later became long-term partners and roommates.
In personality, Natsumi is outgoing and laid back, with a bold and sometimes careless streak. She is chronically late, frequently lazy, and known for her prodigious appetite for food and alcohol, at times reporting to work with a hangover. In contrast to Miyuki, who is punctual, shy, and diligent, Natsumi is tardy, bold, and easygoing. Despite these habits, she is a capable and serious police officer when the situation demands it, and she tends to approach problems through direct physical action rather than careful planning.
Her most notable abilities include extraordinary physical strength, surpassed within the station only by Shoji Tokairin, and strong skills in judo and kendo, which allow her to defeat opponents in training. She is a motorcycle enthusiast who can perform high-risk maneuvers on both motorcycles and mopeds, and she is the only character able to consistently hit the fastballs of the pitcher known as Strikeman, earning her the nickname Home-Run Girl. On duty she keeps a Honda Motocompo mini-moped inside Miyuki's patrol car for flanking tactics, and off duty she originally rode a Yamaha RZV until it was damaged beyond repair. She was later persuaded to buy a broken-down Subaru R-2, which Miyuki rebuilt into a heavily modified patrol vehicle using the engine from the ruined motorcycle, an arrangement that made the car handle in a way similar to a motorbike. Her physical strength and combat ability complement Miyuki's technical brilliance, and together the pair become well known throughout Bokuto Station.
In the story, Natsumi serves as one of the two central patrol officers whose daily work forms the focus of the series. Early on she is infatuated with Detective Tokuno and with the traffic division chief, before meeting Shoji Tokairin, who becomes her rival and eventual love interest. She is scouted by police headquarters for a prototype female motorcycle unit but declines the offer to continue training. Along with Miyuki, she helps dismantle a car smuggling syndicate that stole luxury vehicles, which leads to Assistant Kaoruko Kinoshita transferring both officers to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department as part of a specialized training program. During the Hachi-Ichi-Go crisis, she and Miyuki apprehend the renegade police officer Tadashi Emoto as he attempts to jump from Tokyo Tower, and she later travels to Los Angeles with Miyuki for a foreign exchange program with the Los Angeles Police Department.
Over the course of the series, Natsumi's development is tied closely to her partnership with Miyuki. At the end of the series she is recruited into the Special Assault Team, and her departure and the winding down of the partnership nearly destroys their friendship before the two reconcile. Saori Saga, a former student whom Natsumi and Miyuki had once rescued, takes her place at Bokuto Station. Natsumi later returns to Bokuto temporarily, trains with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Ranger Platoon, and is finally reassigned to Bokuto, where she resumes working as Miyuki's partner after Saori is relocated to another station.
