Description
Jajuka is a minor but significant character from the anime The Vision of Escaflowne. He is a beastman, specifically a dog-like humanoid, who serves as a soldier in the Zaibach Empire. Of greater importance than his military role, however, is his position as the caretaker for Celena Schezar, the sister of the Asturian knight Allen Schezar.
Following Celena's capture by the empire, Jajuka was assigned to look after her. While he initially viewed this duty as simply an obligation, he soon became deeply protective of her. He served as a source of comfort and a surrogate for her missing brother throughout her childhood in Zaibach. Jajuka was helpless to prevent Celena from being taken away to be used as a subject for the empire's Fate Alteration experiments. It is implied he was physically beaten by Zaibach soldiers when he attempted to stop them from taking her. These experiments ultimately resulted in the erasure of Celena's identity and her transformation into the sadistic and unstable Dragonslayer commander, Dilandau Albatou.
Jajuka's motivations are rooted in a quiet but unwavering loyalty and a deep sense of guilt. He spends the story trying to protect the wrecked person Dilandau has become, carrying the burden of knowing what was lost. He continues to serve under Dilandau as his sole remaining soldier after the rest of the Dragonslayers are killed. Even when the unstable Dilandau begins to occasionally revert to the gentler personality of Celena, as seen when a confused Celena is found eating a snail in a garden, Jajuka is there to gently guide her, demonstrating his enduring care for the girl he was charged with protecting.
During the final battle of the series, as Van Fanel is about to deliver a lethal blow to Dilandau, Jajuka intervenes in his own Guymelef, taking the strike meant for his master. Mortally wounded, his final act is to call out to Dilandau, urging him to transform back into Celena. His death and his final wish trigger the memories of Celena's childhood, leading to a permanent reversion of her personality, freeing her from the altered identity of Dilandau. In essence, Jajuka's loyalty and sacrifice achieve what he could not in life, restoring the person he was sworn to protect.
Jajuka is portrayed as a tragic and gentle figure, possessing a quiet sense of knightly devotion despite his position as a mere soldier in an empire known for its ruthless sorcery and military ambition. In terms of notable abilities, as a canine beastman, he possesses enhanced senses and physical attributes. He is also a capable soldier and Guymelef pilot, though his most distinguishing trait is his fierce protectiveness and his emotional fortitude in caring for a deeply damaged individual.
