Description
Butch is a recurring antagonist in the Pokémon anime, identified as an agent of the villainous organization Team Rocket. He operates almost exclusively as the partner of a female agent named Cassidy, forming a duo that serves as a rival team to the more famously inept trio of Jessie, James, and their talking Meowth. Butch first appeared early in the original series and continued to make sporadic appearances across several generations of the show.

In terms of background, Butch went through Team Rocket's training program alongside Cassidy, Jessie, and James. Following their training, he and Cassidy were officially partnered together and assigned various missions by Team Rocket leadership, often receiving orders from a scientist named Professor Namba. Early in their careers, they were given a shared Raticate as their initial Pokémon. Unlike Jessie and James, who frequently go rogue or pursue their own whims, Butch and Cassidy are typically presented as higher-ranked or at least more professional agents entrusted with more complex operations, though their success rate remains consistently low. After many years of service and repeated failures, Butch ultimately makes the decision to leave Team Rocket entirely. He later finds contentment in civilian life, running a small bakery or café in a coastal town.

Butch possesses a personality that balances arrogance with insecurity. He is proud of his standing within Team Rocket and looks down upon Jessie and James, whom he and Cassidy consider embarrassments to the organization due to their low rank and constant failures. He tends to be quieter and less verbally aggressive than his partner Cassidy, often allowing her to take the lead while he focuses on the practical aspects of their schemes, such as driving vehicles, operating machinery, or handling heavy lifting. Despite this subordinate dynamic within his partnership, he is not without his own ego, at one point comparing his toughness and strength favorably to a Golem Pokémon. A notable trait is his intelligence, as he has demonstrated the ability to explain the technical workings of the team's devices, such as an amplifier used to broadcast a Drowzee's psychic control over a wide area.

The most prominent running gag associated with Butch is that nearly every character he encounters mispronounces his name. He has been called Botch, Biff, Bill, Buffy, Bob, Hutch, Butcher, Patch, Chuck, and many other variations. This constant misidentification is a source of immense frustration for him, and he reacts with agitated corrections each time. The gag extends even to his own behavior, as he once instinctively corrected someone who had actually gotten his name right and also mistakenly referred to himself by the wrong name. Cassidy is one of the few people who can correctly say his name, though she also sometimes forgets, which visibly disappoints him. His deep annoyance with this issue once led him to declare he was changing his name entirely.

In terms of role in the story, Butch and Cassidy function as secondary antagonists who occasionally cross paths with Ash Ketchum and his friends. Their schemes are typically more elaborate than those of their rivals, including operating a fake Pokémon breeding center to steal trainers' Pokémon, using a Drowzee to turn an island's Pokémon against their owners, and aiding Professor Namba in an attempt to capture a Lugia and its child. Their plans often involve advanced technology and giant robotic vehicles, such as a Rhyhorn-shaped mech. Despite their superior resources and claims of greater competence, they inevitably fail, frequently ending up arrested or blasted off, much like the more familiar Team Rocket trio. Butch is also a central figure in the spin-off series Pokémon Chronicles, where he and Cassidy serve as the main antagonists across multiple episodes.

Regarding key relationships, Butch's most significant partnership is with Cassidy. He follows her lead, handles the physical work, and appears to value her opinion more than others, making her consistent misnaming of him particularly hurtful. His rivalry with James mirrors the competitive dynamic between Cassidy and Jessie, though it is noticeably less intense. Butch and James share a bitter but somewhat quieter animosity, often mocking one another's competence. Butch also holds a sense of loyalty toward his superiors, Giovanni and Professor Namba, valuing their trust in him and Cassidy as competent operatives.

Throughout the anime, Butch experiences a degree of character development. Early appearances show him as a reasonably confident, if bumbling, agent who takes pride in his work. Over time, as his failures accumulate, his pride takes a toll, and he tearfully expresses fears that he and Cassidy will never amount to anything. His eventual departure from Team Rocket represents a significant shift, as he comes to realize that the organization is not everything in life, growing tired of the daily routine of missions, reprimands, and apologies. In his final appearances, he has completely left behind his life of crime, now content as a baker and café owner.

In terms of notable abilities, Butch demonstrates the typical skills of a Team Rocket agent, including a talent for designing and wearing elaborate disguises and a degree of physical prowess sufficient to lift and throw a person. He has also proven capable of piloting various large-scale mecha. Over the course of the series, Butch has owned or used several Pokémon. His known partners include a Primeape, a Hitmontop, a Mightyena, a Cloyster, and a Shuckle. He and Cassidy also share ownership of a Raticate, which was their original assigned Pokémon. After leaving Team Rocket, Butch is seen with a female Meowth who assists him at his bakery.
