Description
Ohjiro Mihara, written in the Japanese name order as Mihara Ōjirō, is a teenage Angelic Layer competitor and the younger step-brother of Ichiro Mihara, the eccentric inventor known by the nickname Icchan. The original manga describes him as fifteen years old, while the anime gives his age as seventeen and places his birthday on October 20. He carries the nickname the Young Nobleman of the Layer, a title that reflects his poised bearing, refined reputation, and the respect he commands among other players. He lives and competes in Kobe, and he has been involved with Angelic Layer for many years, in large part because the game is what brought him and Icchan together after their parents married. That shared activity helped the two step-brothers form a close bond, and Ohjiro grew into a highly experienced competitor alongside that family connection.

As a deus, the term for the person who controls an angel in the game, Ohjiro is known for his strategic thinking and his composed, analytical approach to battles. He and his angel, Wizard, function as a well-coordinated team, with Ohjiro favoring careful tactics over reckless aggression. His competitive record is strong; he has been the champion of the Kansai regional games and was the runner-up in the national tournament for two consecutive years. Wizard complements his style with a signature defensive technique called Magic Guard, which blocks incoming attacks using an electric shield generated from static electricity. Compared with his older step-brother, who is spontaneous and eccentric, Ohjiro appears more level-headed and conventional, though he still has his own quiet quirks and a stubborn, determined side when pursuing something he cares about.

Ohjiro's motivations are closely tied to his feelings for Shuko Suzuhara, the mother of the main character Misaki Suzuhara. He developed a childhood crush on Shuko, and that crush became a driving force in his competitive life, producing an intense desire to defeat her angel, Athena. He believes that beating Athena would allow him to finally move past his feelings for her. At the same time, he understands that a relationship with Shuko is impossible, and he reaches a point where he simply wants to be rejected clearly so he can let go and move on. This unresolved emotional conflict shapes much of his early behavior and gives his ambition a personal, somewhat melancholy edge.

His bond with Shuko's daughter complicates his emotional journey. Misaki has a similar atmosphere to her mother, and Ohjiro gradually finds himself drawn to her as well. He first meets her while she is practicing with Icchan, stepping in to help train her when his brother disappears at an awkward moment. Over time, his initial friendliness deepens into genuine affection, and he comes to recognize that his feelings for Misaki are real rather than simply an echo of his old crush on Shuko. In the anime, the two go on a date, and shortly afterward Ohjiro confesses that he is falling in love with her, having finally untangled his emotions. In the manga, the romantic dynamics develop somewhat differently, with Tamayo Kizaki falling in love with Ohjiro, while his own affections remain centered on Misaki.

In the story, Ohjiro functions as a skilled rival and an important early model of high-level play for Misaki. He recognizes her natural talent and serves as a benchmark for her growth, both as an opponent and as someone who encourages her development as a deus. Their relationship moves from casual acquaintance to mutual respect and then to romantic interest, adding a personal layer to their competitive encounters. His role culminates in the later stages of the national tournament, where he faces Misaki in a decisive match. He loses that battle, but he does so with composure and confidence, accepting the outcome without resentment or regret.

Ohjiro's development over the course of the story is primarily one of emotional maturity. He begins as a young man defined by an impossible childhood infatuation and the ambition to overcome it through victory, and he ends as someone who has let go of that fixation, acknowledged his true feelings for Misaki, and learned to accept defeat gracefully. His growth is also tied to his relationship with Icchan, since the bond the two brothers built through Angelic Layer remains a steady foundation for him. By the end, his confidence no longer depends on winning, and his sense of self is grounded in the genuine connections he has formed rather than in proving himself against the past. His notable strengths remain his strategic mind, his years of experience, and his calm, dignified presence, all of which made him one of the most accomplished players in the game.
