Description
Hatoko Kobayashi is a young girl who attends kindergarten and is a prominent figure in the world of Angelic Layer, known by the title the Miracle Kindergartener. Despite being only five or six years old, her skill in the game is exceptional, making her the defending champion of the Kanto regional tournament. Her birthday is December 7th. She is the younger sister of Kotaro Kobayashi.
In terms of appearance, Hatoko has long, midnight blue or purplish-black hair that reaches past her waist, and purple eyes. She is often seen in her school uniform from the Eriol Academy, which consists of a white jacket and skirt with red trim, complemented by a red beret.
Hatoko possesses a personality that blends remarkable maturity with a childlike mischievous streak. She is highly intelligent, hardworking, and takes Angelic Layer very seriously, dedicating herself to rigorous practice and studying her opponents' past matches. She resents being treated as a child and insists on her independence. Away from the layer, she enjoys teasing her older brother Kotaro, particularly about his romantic feelings for his classmate, Misaki Suzuhara. She believes strongly that in Angelic Layer, a Deus's heart and faith in their Angel are more important than age or physical size.
Her primary motivation in the story is to compete at the highest level of Angelic Layer and to prove that her philosophy about the game holds true. She acts as a rival and mentor to Misaki Suzuhara, the protagonist. After meeting Misaki and seeing her potential, Hatoko becomes determined to face her in the tournament. She serves as a benchmark for Misaki's growth, ultimately becoming the first and only Deus to defeat Misaki in an official match. Despite their rivalry, Hatoko forms a deep friendship with Misaki, offering her encouragement and advice while pushing her to become stronger. She later fulfills the role of Misaki's second during the national tournament, demonstrating their close bond.
Throughout the series, Hatoko experiences significant development. Her defeat by Sai Jounouchi and her Angel, Shirahime, is a major turning point. This loss shakes her confidence, leading her to blame herself for not being a strong enough Deus for her Angel, Suzuka. She shows vulnerability and sensitivity in the face of defeat, but her resolve strengthens as she vows to continue improving.
Hatoko’s Angel is named Suzuka, often referred to as Light Speed Suzuka due to her incredible swiftness in battle. Suzuka's fighting style is based on speed and powerful, precise attacks, reflecting Hatoko's disciplined approach to the game. Her signature finishing technique is a somersault kick called Rolling Thunder. This move is so notable that it becomes a technique that Misaki adopts for her own Angel, Hikaru. Hatoko is deeply caring towards Suzuka, viewing her as more than just a doll and taking her everywhere she goes.
