Description
Eluza, also known as Elza, is a primary character in the 1986 anime film Gall Force - Eternal Story. As the eldest and highest-ranking Solnoid officer among the main cast, she serves as the second-in-command of the cruiser Star Leaf. At the beginning of the story, the ship's captain leaves for a meeting on the fleet's flagship, placing Eluza in a position of temporary command just as the Solnoid fleet comes under a devastating attack by their ancient enemies, the Paranoids.
In terms of personality, Eluza is depicted as a strict, by-the-book officer who possesses a very strong will and a deep-seated belief in the war effort. She is a born leader, brave and collected under pressure, and values teamwork and cooperation among the survivors under her charge. However, her inflexibility and unyielding nature are highlighted as defining traits that ultimately contribute to her tragic fate. Her dedication to duty and her role as a patriot are unwavering.
Throughout the film, Eluza is forced to take command of the damaged Star Leaf, leading the small group of survivors including Rabby, Lufy, Catty, Pony, Patty, and Remy. Her primary motivation is to fulfill her orders and ensure the safety of her crew, continuing their mission to reach the planet Chaos. Her role in the story becomes even more critical when a shapeshifting bioweapon, part of a secret Species Unification Plan devised by the leaders of both warring races, infiltrates the ship. During a hunt for the alien creature, Eluza is separated from her companion, Catty, and is attacked and impregnated by the bioweapon. This event occurs in full view of the other crew members, and the creature proves invulnerable to their weapons. Seriously wounded, Eluza is taken to the infirmary. In her final moments, she alludes to the horrific plan, stating her refusal to allow it to succeed, before dying from her injuries. Her body is then given a funeral in space, launched from the Star Leaf in a capsule.
Key relationships include her camaraderie with the young pilot Rabby, to whom she appears close enough that they can interact casually even while on duty. Her death becomes a primary motivation for Rabby's crucial decisions later in the narrative. She also interacts with Catty, another crew member, whom she is paired with during the search for the alien. Caitian, a different character in a later timeline, is noted to be the one who chooses Eluza's reincarnation, Fortin, for a new mission.
Regarding notable abilities, Eluza is a highly competent Solnoid soldier and commander. Her weapons of choice include a pistol and a rifle-like weapon, demonstrating her readiness for combat even as a command officer.
A later story, Gall Force: The Revolution, features an alternate version of the character who serves as the captain of the Star Leaf from the outset. This iteration is described as much calmer and more calculating, and contrary to her original counterpart's strict demeanor, she is involved in a romantic relationship with a high-ranking officer named Pfizer. This version deserts the battlefield after realizing Pfizer is willing to sacrifice her own forces, including the Star Leaf, sparking a rebellion. This stands in contrast to the original Eluza, whose inflexibility and devotion to duty ultimately lead to her death.
