Description
Kimiko Akai, originally introduced as Kimiko Higuchi, serves as a poignant figure in Gunbuster, representing the ordinary life left behind by the protagonist, Noriko Takaya. She is introduced as a student at the Okinawa High School for Girls, where she is a close friend and classmate of Noriko. Like Noriko, Kimiko undergoes training to pilot the RX-7 Machine Weapon, but unlike her friend, she is not selected to go into space on the Silver Star and remains on Earth.

In her early appearances, Kimiko is simply a supportive peer, sharing the everyday struggles and ambitions of a cadet. However, her true significance emerges later in the story due to the effects of time dilation from Noriko's faster-than-light travels. While Noriko spends what feels like a short time on missions, decades pass on Earth. When the two meet again, the difference in their lived experience is dramatic and heart-wrenching. Kimiko has aged naturally into a mother approaching thirty, with a daughter named Takami, while Noriko is still physically a teenager. This reunion forces both characters, and the audience, to confront the profound personal cost of Noriko's interstellar war.

Kimiko’s personality as an adult is defined by a quiet maturity and a grounded sense of worry, which contrasts sharply with Noriko's eternal youth and drive. A memorable scene depicting their divergent paths takes place on a playground; Noriko swings with carefree abandon, while Kimiko chooses to simply sit on the swing, a subtle but powerful illustration of how her priorities and perspective have changed with age and responsibility.

Her motivations become deeply rooted in the safety of her family. As the war with the alien space monsters escalates, Kimiko becomes preoccupied with rumors about the new super-spaceship, Eltreum. She fears the military is lying to the public and that the ship is actually a secret evacuation vessel for a chosen few, meaning she and her daughter would be among the vast majority left behind to die. Her concerns give a human face to the civilian fear and uncertainty gripping Earth, providing a ground-level view of the conflict that Noriko, as a pilot, is shielded from.

Regarding her abilities, Kimiko is a capable pilot in her own right, having trained in the RX-7 Machine Weapon, a 9 to 10-meter tall mobile suit that served as Earth's main defense in the early stages of the alien war. These mecha were equipped with armaments such as a plasma lancer, an electrified staff, and inertia cancelers, though they were considered relatively weak and often outmatched by the alien forces. While she never pilots one in combat, her training establishes her as a peer to Noriko, making the divergence in their fates all the more meaningful; both had similar beginnings, but one was chosen for a legendary, time-bending journey while the other lived a normal, aging life on a planet under siege.
