Description
Eriol Hiiragizawa is a complex figure whose arrival in the story marks a significant turning point. He first appears as a transfer student from England who joins the class of Sakura Kinomoto and her friends at Tomoeda Elementary School. Physically, he matches the age of his new classmates, though this appearance is maintained through magical means rather than reflecting his true chronological age. He shares a notable physical resemblance with both Sakura's father, Fujitaka Kinomoto, and her friend, Yukito Tsukishiro. His typical look includes glasses and straight hair, often accompanied by a gentle smile that can sometimes give way to a more penetrating and knowing expression.

The core of Eriol's identity is rooted in his magical heritage. He is a reincarnation of the great sorcerer Clow Reed, having inherited Clow's memories, immense magical power, and the responsibilities that come with them. Unlike other reincarnations, he is the one who holds the lion's share of Clow's original magic. Despite this power, his personality is layered and somewhat paradoxical. He is often described as a remarkably kind and gentle person, yet he himself acknowledges a more "twisted" side to his nature. In his daily school life, he presents himself as a quiet, mature, and well-mannered boy, which endears him to his teachers and peers. He also has a playful and mischievous side, frequently joining his classmate Takashi Yamazaki in concocting elaborate and fantastical stories. He is highly perceptive, often aware of the feelings of those around him, such as the romantic tension between Sakura and Syaoran Li, and he offers discreet encouragement.

Eriol's primary motivation for moving to Japan is not malicious but rather a carefully orchestrated plan born from his own weariness. Possessing the ability to foresee almost everything and carrying the burden of being the world's most powerful magician, he found little joy or surprise in life. His true goal is to force Sakura to grow stronger by converting the dormant Clow Cards into a new set of cards powered by her own magical energy, known as the Sakura Cards. This is a necessary step, as the old Clow Cards were beginning to lose their power. To achieve this, he consciously takes on the role of an antagonist, using his magic to create a series of mysterious and challenging incidents that Sakura must overcome. He works alongside his own pair of magical guardians, the serious Spinel Sun and the playful Ruby Moon, who are the counterparts to Sakura's Cerberus and Yue.

His relationships with the main cast are defined by this hidden agenda. He becomes a close and trusted friend to Sakura, always watching over her progress with a careful eye. While Syaoran is immediately suspicious of his aura and feels a sense of rivalry, Eriol remains unfailingly friendly towards him, even privately referring to him as a "darling relative" due to Syaoran's distant blood relation to Clow Reed. A significant relationship is with Kaho Mizuki, a former teacher who had also acted as a guardian for Sakura. Their connection is deep and romantic, and after the events in Tomoeda, they return to England together to live. Another crucial connection is with Sakura's father, Fujitaka. In the original story, Fujitaka is the other half of Clow Reed's soul, the vessel that received no magical power. Eriol's ultimate plan is to have Sakura, whose magic has surpassed his own, split his power evenly with Fujitaka, thus relieving him of his burden and allowing them both to live more ordinary lives.

Eriol's development is closely tied to the fulfillment of his goal. After Sakura successfully converts all the cards and proves her strength, he reveals his true identity and intentions. With her help, he is able to transfer half of his magic to Fujitaka, a process he could not accomplish on his own. With this act, he loses his ability to see the future and is no longer the singular most powerful mage, which is precisely what he desired. His character arc moves from that of a mysterious, scheming figure to a relieved and grateful friend who can finally step back from his inherited responsibilities.

In terms of abilities, Eriol is an exceptionally powerful sorcerer, recognized even by later antagonists as being one of the strongest in the world. He possesses a vast knowledge of magic inherited from Clow Reed and can perform complex spells with ease. His signature abilities include premonition, the creation of magical artifacts, and the power to manipulate events on a large scale, such as plunging an entire city into darkness or stopping time. His magical staff is similar in design to the one Clow Reed used. He also created his own guardians, demonstrating a mastery of magical creation. Even after losing half his power, he remains highly skilled, retaining the ability to perform divination and other forms of magic. Despite his extraordinary abilities, his power is not infinite, and he can be physically exhausted after intense magical confrontations. Eriol ultimately stands as a guiding figure, a mentor in disguise who uses his power not for dominance but to ensure the peaceful continuation of the magical legacy he inherited.
