Description
Naoko Yanagisawa is a supporting character in the anime and manga series Cardcaptor Sakura. She is a classmate and close friend of Sakura Kinomoto, often appearing alongside her other friends Chiharu Mihara and Rika Sasaki during school events and everyday life. Naoko is cheerful, intelligent, and kind, with a calm and gentle manner of speaking. She wears round glasses and has short, bobbed brown hair. Despite her friendly and approachable nature, she is not very athletic and struggles with physical education, though she still participates in the school’s cheerleading squad alongside Sakura and Chiharu.

Naoko has a deep love for reading, particularly fantasy stories and ghost stories. She is fascinated by mysterious and supernatural phenomena and shows no fear of scary situations, in contrast to Sakura, who is easily frightened. Naoko often enjoys telling ghost stories and urban legends, sometimes unintentionally scaring Sakura. She also has a creative side and is skilled at writing scripts for school plays. Her favorite school subject is mathematics, while physical education is her least favorite. In her free time, she enjoys drawing and quiet activities.

In terms of motivations, Naoko is driven by curiosity and a love for imaginative stories. She finds enjoyment in exploring the unknown and is always eager to hear or share a new tale. She does not possess any magical abilities, but she inadvertently becomes involved in magical incidents due to her proximity to Sakura. In one notable episode, she accidentally acquires the Create card, which had disguised itself as a book. Anything she wrote in the book came to life, creating a series of bizarre occurrences that Sakura had to resolve. Naoko remained unaware of the card’s true nature and was simply delighted by what she considered a supernatural experience. She has also been involved with the Illusion card, investigating a ghost she thought she saw in the woods after cheerleading practice.

Naoko’s key relationships are with her close circle of friends: Sakura, Chiharu, Rika, and Tomoyo Daidouji. She shares a warm and supportive friendship with each of them, often discussing books and stories. She also interacts with her classmate Yamazaki, whose elaborate tall tales she finds amusing, and she sometimes plays along with his stories, which can make others believe them more easily.

Throughout the series, Naoko’s role remains consistent as a loyal school friend and a source of lighthearted, everyday normalcy in contrast to the magical adventures Sakura undertakes. She does not undergo significant personal development, but she continues to appear as a background character in the original series, the second animated film, and the Clear Card arc. Her notable abilities lie in her creativity, writing talent, and her fearless curiosity about the strange and unexplained.
