Description
Nadeshiko Kinomoto was born Nadeshiko Amamiya on May 20. She was the only daughter of the wealthy Amamiya family. As a high school student, she fell in love with her teacher, Fujitaka Kinomoto, and married him at the age of sixteen. The marriage caused a rift with her family, particularly with her grandfather, Masaki Amamiya, who initially disapproved. She worked as a professional model from her teens until her death. Nadeshiko passed away from illness at the age of twenty-seven, when her daughter Sakura was three years old and her son Touya was ten.
Nadeshiko had a gentle, kind, and cheerful nature. She was often described as pure-hearted and innocent, but also absent-minded and clumsy. She had a habit of sleeping anywhere and was not particularly athletic. Despite her occasional airheadedness, she was deeply caring and loved her family immensely. She enjoyed sweet foods and black tea, and her favorite flowers included wisteria, peach blossoms, and cherry blossoms. She also loved sunshine and the color white. She had long, curly purple hair and green eyes.
Her primary motivation was the well-being and happiness of her family. Even after death, her love for them remained strong. She continued to watch over her husband and children from beyond, appearing as a spirit with feathered wings. In life, she possessed the ability to see spirits, a power that her son Touya inherited. Her own spirit could interact with the physical world in subtle ways. She could lower a fever by touching Sakura's forehead, and she could cause cherry blossom petals to rain down to express her joy, such as when Fujitaka reconciled with her grandfather.
In the story, Nadeshiko serves as the deceased mother of the main character Sakura Kinomoto. She is present only in memories, photographs, and as a spirit. Her absence shapes the emotional landscape of the Kinomoto household. Her husband Fujitaka keeps a photograph of her on the dining table, changing it each morning, and Sakura greets it each day. Initially, only Touya can see her spirit. As Sakura grows in her magical abilities, she also becomes able to perceive her mother. Nadeshiko’s spirit intervenes to protect Sakura on at least two notable occasions: she catches Sakura when the Illusion card tricks her into walking off a cliff, and she lowers Sakura's fever during an illness. In the Clear Card arc, Nadeshiko appears in spiritual form and is visible to Sakura for the first time. In the manga, after Fujitaka receives half of Eriol’s magical power, he is able to see Nadeshiko as well, leading to a reunion.
Key relationships include her husband Fujitaka, with whom she shared a deep romantic bond that defied her family’s wishes. Her son Touya inherited her ability to see spirits and felt her presence throughout his childhood. Her daughter Sakura inherited her warm-heartedness and cheerful disposition. Nadeshiko named Sakura after the cherry blossom, her favorite flower. Her cousin Sonomi Daidouji doted on her greatly, and after Nadeshiko’s death, Sonomi blamed Fujitaka and remained distant from the family for years. Nadeshiko’s grandfather, Masaki Amamiya, eventually regretted opposing her marriage, and her spirit expressed happiness when her family began to reconcile with him.
Nadeshiko’s character does not undergo development in a traditional sense, as she is deceased when the series begins. Instead, her influence on the living characters evolves as they grow and as magical barriers between the living and the spirit world are lowered. Her enduring love and protective presence remain a constant source of comfort and motivation for Sakura and Touya. Her notable abilities are limited to her spectral manifestations: appearing as a winged spirit, sensing and protecting her loved ones, and producing small magical effects such as cooling a fever or scattering blossoms. She does not engage in combat or possess any spellcasting powers beyond these gentle acts of care.
