TV-Series
Description
Kerberos, almost always called Kero or Kero-chan by his friends, is one of the two central guardians of the Clow Cards. Created by the powerful sorcerer Clow Reed, Kero is known as the Guardian of the Seal, bearing the title of the Sun and holding dominion over the elements of earth and fire. His name is derived from the mythical three-headed dog Cerberus, a reference to his original duty as a guardian of a powerful and dangerous force. For many years, he slumbered within the front cover of the Clow Book until he was accidentally awakened by a young girl named Sakura Kinomoto.

Physically, Kero has two distinct forms that he can switch between at will, though he spends the vast majority of his time in the first. His most common appearance is his borrowed or false form, in which he resembles a small, orange-yellow, winged stuffed animal, often likened to a plush toy or a lion cub. In this guise, he is small enough to fit in a pocket or a desk drawer, and his tiny wings allow him to fly, albeit with limited magical ability beyond basic sensing. His true form, which he adopts only when a serious situation demands his full power, is that of a majestic and powerful beast. He takes on the appearance of a large, tawny, maneless lion or cougar, with a pair of enormous, angelic white wings and a metal chest plate and helmet adorned with a large red jewel. In this form, his voice deepens, his manner becomes more commanding, and his magical power is fully unleashed.

Kero’s personality is a vibrant and often contradictory mix of childish indulgence and ancient wisdom. On the surface, he is bossy, gluttonous, loud-mouthed, and extremely proud, often obsessing over his own coolness and demanding respect. His greatest joys in life include playing video games, eating sweet foods like cake, cookies, and chocolate, and being the center of attention. He happily poses for the video recordings made by Sakura’s friend Tomoyo, and unlike Sakura, he relishes wearing the cute costumes and accessories she creates. Despite his love of food, as a magical being powered by the sun, he does not actually need to eat to sustain himself; he does so purely for pleasure. He also has a notable speech quirk in the original Japanese version, speaking with a distinct Osaka dialect, which gives him a folksy and slightly comedic tone.

Beneath this seemingly carefree exterior, however, lies a remarkably intelligent and experienced guardian. Kero is deeply knowledgeable about all forms of mysticism, not just the Clow Cards, and has a keen ability to sense magical auras and presences. He is far older and wiser than his plush form suggests, and he is capable of becoming entirely serious and focused when the situation demands it. Kero actively avoids dwelling on sad or lonely realities, preferring loud fun and indulgent hobbies as a distraction, which indicates a deeper, more complex emotional core. This is evident during the first major arc of the story, where he privately obsesses over the impending Final Judgment, experiencing nightmares and intense worry, yet he conceals this from Sakura to protect her and not burden her with fear.

Kero’s primary role in the story is that of a guide and mentor to Sakura Kinomoto. Upon being awakened, he appoints her as the Cardcaptor, bestowing upon her the Sealing Key and entrusting her with the mission of recapturing all the scattered Clow Cards. He teaches her how to use her magic, identifies cards they encounter, and provides crucial information about their abilities. As the Guardian of the Sun, his role is specifically that of the selector; he is responsible for choosing the candidate who will face the other guardian, Yue, in the Final Judgment to determine who will become the new master of the Clow Cards.

His key relationships define his character arc. His bond with Sakura is the most important, evolving from a purely functional master-servant dynamic into a deep and genuine friendship. He truly cares for her well-being, often comforting her when she is sad and acting as a loyal companion, even as he continues to advise her as his mistress. He lives in a small bed Sakura made for him in the bottom drawer of her desk, a fitting home for his small form. His relationship with his fellow guardian, Yue, is complex and ancient. They have known each other for centuries, and Kero trusts him enough to discuss serious matters like the waning of Yue’s power. However, there is also an undercurrent of petty jealousy, as Kero sometimes feels that both their creator, Clow Reed, and Sakura favor Yue over him. In contrast, his relationship with the rival cardcaptor Syaoran Li is one of constant bickering. Syaoran frequently insults him by calling him a stuffed animal or plush toy, which leads to Kero yelling at or even biting him. Despite their squabbling, Kero comes to accept Syaoran as an ally and shows sympathy for Sakura’s feelings toward him.

Throughout the story, Kero demonstrates significant development. He begins with a singular focus on preparing for the Final Judgment but is forced to trust in Sakura’s unique strengths, which are based on compassion rather than pure power. After Sakura successfully passes the Final Judgment and is named the new master, Kero’s loyalty is fully transferred to her, solidifying their partnership. In the sequel series, Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, he continues in his role as her guardian and confidant, facing new magical mysteries alongside her.

Kero’s notable abilities are tied directly to his solar and Western magic alignment. In his true form, he has jurisdiction over all Clow Cards associated with fire and earth, such as The Firey and The Earthy, as well as The Light and many others. His direct combat abilities in this form include breathing powerful balls of fire and summoning protective energy barriers. Even in his small, plush form, he retains the ability to fly, sense other magical beings, and occasionally breath small flames or launch tiny fireballs. He is also a polyglot, knowing at least Japanese, Chinese, and English, a skill likely acquired over his long existence.
