TV-Series
Description
Bruno, also known by his epithet Blueno, is a character from the story who initially appears as the affable owner of a bar in the bustling city of Water 7. This unassuming role, however, is a meticulously maintained disguise for his true identity as a high-ranking agent of the Cipher Pol No. 9, an elite, secret assassination squad working directly for the World Government. For five years, he lived this double life, integrating into the community while his mission was to locate the blueprints for an ancient super-weapon known as Pluton.
In terms of appearance, Bruno is a tall and powerfully built man with distinct, thick lips and a dark beard. His most striking physical trait is his hairstyle, which is styled upward into two prominent points that resemble the horns of a bull, an animal he is often associated with. During his time as a bartender, his attire was casual, featuring a yellow, polka-dotted shirt and a white apron. When acting as a CP9 agent, he would switch to a more formal and intimidating black suit, and for his most secretive operations, he wore a checkered cloak and animal masks, including a bear mask, to conceal his features.
Bruno’s personality is a study in stark contrast. On the surface, he projects the image of a calm, somewhat slow-thinking, and unassuming bartender, always polishing a glass and speaking in a distinctive, laid-back, almost rapping tone. However, this is a facade that hides a calculating, perceptive, and utterly ruthless professional. Unlike many of his CP9 colleagues, who openly display sadistic pleasure in combat or toy with their opponents, Bruno remains consistently stoic, calm, and collected, even in the heat of battle. This composure makes him a chilling symbol of the World Government's cold, cynical form of justice, where orders are carried out without emotion or hesitation. He is highly intelligent and detail-oriented, being the only agent to notice a vital clue—that the den den mushi (transceiver) had been left off the hook—which led him to suspect the Straw Hat Pirates' invasion of Enies Lobby before anyone else. He also possesses a rational, skeptical side, as he does not believe in unproven myths, such as the superstition that devils reside within Devil Fruits.
Bruno’s role in the story is a pivotal one. He is one of the primary antagonists of the Water 7 and Enies Lobby story arcs. His primary function is as an agent of the World Government, tasked with capturing the archaeologist Nico Robin and securing the Pluton blueprints. He personally uses his powers to infiltrate the home of Mayor Iceburg to assassinate him and later kidnaps Robin, handing her over to his corrupt superior, Spandam. On the sea train heading to Enies Lobby, Bruno single-handedly thwarts the rescue attempt by Sanji, Franky, and Sogeking, easily defeating them and securing Robin's transfer to the judicial island. His most significant role, however, is as the opponent who forces Monkey D. Luffy to reveal his true power for the first time. On the roof of the courthouse, Bruno confronts a furious Luffy. After a short battle where Bruno initially has the upper hand, Luffy unveils his new technique, Gear Second. Overwhelmed by the immense speed and power, Bruno is defeated by a devastating attack, the Gum-Gum Jet Bazooka, marking a major turning point in the crew's battle to save their friend.
Key relationships define his place within the organization. He is a long-standing member of CP9, having trained alongside powerful agents like Rob Lucci, Kaku, and Jabra from a young age. While they are comrades, there is a sense of professional rivalry and hierarchy, with Lucci being the undisputed strongest and leader. Bruno respects Lucci's authority, as seen when Lucci notes that Bruno's senses have been dulled by his time as a bartender. He shares a particularly strong bond with the other members of his unit, as after their crushing defeat, Bruno uses his unique abilities to save them from the destruction of the Buster Call, proving his loyalty to his team extends beyond mere orders. In later story developments, Bruno and several other former CP9 members are reinstated and even promoted to Cipher Pol 0, the most elite and powerful intelligence organization in the world, suggesting his skills and dedication were ultimately recognized and rewarded by the World Government.
Bruno's abilities are formidable and unique, built upon two powerful systems. The foundation of his physical prowess is the martial art known as the Six Powers, which grants him superhuman capabilities. He has a Doriki, a measure of physical strength, of 820, ranking him as the fourth strongest in the original CP9 unit. His skills include Soru, for explosive, near-invisible speed; Tekkai, which hardens his body to the density of iron for incredible defense; Geppo, allowing him to kick off the air to fly; Rankyaku, a powerful flying kick that creates a blade-like air slash; and Shigan, a finger thrust with the piercing power of a bullet. He was also the first to demonstrate a mobile form of Tekkai called "Wheel". Furthermore, supplementary material confirms he later learns to use both Busoshoku and Kenbunshoku Haki, two spiritual abilities that enhance attack, defense, and perception.
His most distinctive power, however, comes from having eaten the Doa Doa no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. This ability allows him to create doors on any surface he touches, including walls, the ground, the human body, and even the air itself. By creating an "air door," he can step into a separate, invisible pocket dimension, which he can use as a hiding place, a means of escape, or a pathway for teleportation across great distances. He exploited this power to move between train cars and to ambush his opponents. In combat, he can create doors on his enemy's limbs to trap them or on their face to disorient them by spinning it like a revolving door. This combination of raw physical power from the Six Powers and the unparalleled mobility and trickery of the Door-Door Fruit makes Bruno a highly dangerous and versatile agent, a true embodiment of the silent, unstoppable assassin.
