Description
Basil Hawkins is a pirate from the North Blue known by the epithet the Magician. He is the captain of the Hawkins Pirates and was recognized as one of the eleven Supernovas, the group of rookie pirates with bounties over 100,000,000 berries who arrived at the Sabaody Archipelago at the same time as the Straw Hat crew. Following the events of the Paramount War, he became identified as a member of the Worst Generation, a more inclusive term for that powerful new wave of pirates. His initial bounty was 249,000,000 berries, which later increased to 320,000,000.
Hawkins is a tall, slim man with a distinct appearance, often appearing calm and expressionless. He has long blond hair, distinctive six-stripe patterns on his forehead, and a cross tattoo on his throat. True to his epithet, Hawkins is a fortune teller who governs nearly all of his actions by the results of tarot card readings. He is a staunch fatalist, believing that the outcome of any situation, including life and death, has already been decided. This belief allows him to maintain an almost unnerving level of composure, showing no visible fear or panic even when facing overwhelmingly powerful opponents like Admiral Kizaru or the Emperor Kaidou. He is a man of few words, speaking in a low, deliberate tone, and dislikes unnecessary violence and disorder, once stopping a crew member from attacking a clumsy waiter.
Hawkins's primary motivation is survival, which he pursues through calculated submission to overwhelming power. After being defeated by Kaidou, he chose to betray his pirate alliance and serve the Emperor as a Shinuchi, or Headliner, a high-ranking officer within the Beasts Pirates. This decision is driven by his fatalistic nature; when his cards show a zero percent chance of victory or survival in a direct confrontation, he will not fight to the death but will instead bend his will to the stronger force. His primary goal is to navigate the treacherous waters of the New World by aligning himself with the fate he perceives as most likely to let him live.
Hawkins’s role in the larger story is primarily as an antagonist and a foil to other pirates. He initially appears as a rival Supernova but later becomes a significant supporting antagonist during the Wano Country Arc. He serves as an obstacle to the Straw Hat Pirates and their allies, using his cunning and powers to enforce Kaidou’s will. His character development traces a path from a formidable, independent captain to a subordinate who is gradually broken by the brutal hierarchy of the Emperors. His downfall illustrates the limitations of a philosophy based purely on probability and self-preservation, contrasting sharply with the unwavering will and risk-taking nature of characters like Monkey D. Luffy and Trafalgar Law.
Hawkins is the captain of the Hawkins Pirates, a crew that includes members with mystical appearances, such as the cat Mink, Faust. While he maintains a loyal crew, his most significant relationships are forged through convenience and broken by betrayal. He formed a short-lived pirate alliance with Eustass Kid and Scratchmen Apoo, intending to challenge an Emperor. However, Apoo was secretly working for Kaidou, leading to the alliance’s immediate destruction and Hawkins’s subjugation. During his time as a Headliner, he worked alongside other Beasts Pirates officers, but his loyalty remained conditional, based on his own survival calculations.
Basil Hawkins possesses a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit known as the Straw-Straw Fruit. Its primary ability allows him to create straw voodoo dolls that transfer any damage he receives to another person. He typically carries a number of these dolls on his person, effectively granting him multiple extra lives. For each attack he endures, a doll is expelled from his body, showing that the damage was redirected. This ability makes him extremely difficult to harm directly, as an opponent must land enough attacks to exhaust his supply of dolls before they can wound him. His other major ability is to transform his body into a large, monstrous scarecrow-like form, increasing his offensive power and allowing him to strike with large straw claws. He is also a proficient swordsman and has been shown to use both Observation and Armament Haki.
