Description
Aphelandra is a fictional character from the manga and anime series One Piece. She is a warrior from the Kuja tribe and a resident of Amazon Lily, an island exclusively for women located in the Calm Belt. As a member of the island's护国战士, her primary duty is to protect her homeland. Following the two-year time skip in the story, she becomes a member of the Kuja Pirates, serving under the leadership of Boa Hancock, the Snake Princess and captain of the crew.

In terms of appearance, Aphelandra is notably tall, with some sources estimating her height to be close to four meters, making her significantly larger than many of her fellow warriors. Despite her imposing stature, her facial features are childlike, characterized by wide, dark brown eyes. She has long, orange-brown hair that falls evenly past her shoulders. Her attire is typical of the Kuja, consisting of scanty clothing: a blue corset with yellow borders and a matching bikini bottom. She also wears a white cape and a plumed morion-type helmet that has cheek guards and displays the Kuja emblem. For footwear, she wears dark brown outdoor boots. Her weapon of choice is a large sword, which she carries sheathed horizontally across her lower back, a style distinct from most other sword-wielders in the series who wear their blades on their hip.

Aphelandra's personality provides a stark contrast to her large physique. She is depicted as being quite timid and gentle, often repeating commands that others give to her as she obeys. She possesses a kind and innocent nature, once even apologizing to Monkey D. Luffy because she felt it was necessary to fight him simply for being a man. Despite her timidity, she is serious about her duties and responds to orders in a militaristic fashion, often suddenly standing straight and giving a right-handed salute.

Her role in the story primarily takes place during the Amazon Lily Arc. She and her friends, Marguerite and Sweet Pea, were on a hunting expedition when they discovered the unconscious body of Monkey D. Luffy. His body had become covered in poisonous mushrooms after he was sent to the island by Bartholomew Kuma. Believing him to be a lost child, they brought him back to their village to cure him. When Luffy was revealed to be a man, which is forbidden to set foot on Amazon Lily, he was imprisoned. After he escaped, Aphelandra and the other护国战士 pursued him.

A key moment in her story occurs when Luffy is captured by the Gorgon Sisters. As Boa Hancock prepared to execute Luffy for breaking the island's law, Marguerite stepped forward to take sole responsibility for allowing a man to enter the country. Demonstrating strong loyalty and a sense of shared responsibility, Aphelandra and Sweet Pea also stepped forward, claiming they should share the blame. As punishment for this crime, Hancock used her Devil Fruit powers to petrify all three women, turning them into stone. During his subsequent battle with the Boa Sisters, Luffy moved their petrified bodies out of harm's way to ensure they would not be shattered, hoping they could one day be restored. After Luffy defeated the sisters and made a deal with Hancock, the Empress was moved by his sincerity and reversed the petrification, returning Aphelandra and her friends to normal.

Following these events, Aphelandra participated in the festivities held in Luffy's honor and bid him farewell when he left the island to rescue his brother, Portgas D. Ace. She was overjoyed alongside her fellow Kuja when Luffy returned to Amazon Lily after the traumatic Summit War of Marineford. In the anime television special 3D2Y, she is shown assisting Luffy from afar during his two years of training on Rusukaina Island by helping to supply him with food and clothing, alongside Boa Hancock's sisters, Sandersonia and Marigold.

Regarding her abilities and powers, Aphelandra is a melee-type fighter who relies on her great size and physical strength to gain an advantage over her opponents. Her large stature proved to be an unexpected obstacle for Luffy, who once bounced off her chest during an escape attempt. Her primary weapon is a large jian sword, which is unique among the Kuja warriors, who are more commonly seen using snake bows. While it is suggested that she may not have fully mastered Haki during her first appearance, as she was unable to significantly injure Luffy's rubber body, her later promotion to the Kuja Pirates indicates that she has become one of the stronger warriors on the island. This is because only the strongest fighters are allowed to join the pirate crew for their voyages. Aphelandra's birthday is August 1st, a detail derived from her first spoken word, "Hi," which sounds similar to the Japanese words for the numbers eight and one.
