Description
Momonosuke Kouzuki is the son of Kozuki Oden and Kozuki Toki, born in the Kuri region of Wano Country. As the legitimate heir of the Kozuki clan, he is destined to become the shogun of Wano. His early life was upended when his father was executed by Kurozumi Orochi and Kaido. To save him from assassination, his mother used her Devil Fruit ability to send him and several retainers twenty years into the future. This left him a traumatized child in a strange time, burdened with the expectation of liberating his homeland.
In his first appearances during the Punk Hazard arc, Momonosuke is introduced as a frightened, stubborn boy rescued by the Straw Hat Pirates. He refuses to eat the food provided by Caesar Clown’s captors and accidentally consumes an artificial Devil Fruit created by Vegapunk—the Uo Uo no Mi, Model Seiryu—which allows him to transform into a pink serpentine dragon. His personality initially comes across as arrogant and demanding; he insists on being treated as a superior, calling Luffy his servant. This behavior masks deep insecurity and fear, as he is powerless and depends on others for protection.
Over the course of the story, Momonosuke undergoes significant character development. He gradually learns to trust and respect his allies, particularly Luffy, whom he begins to view as a genuine friend and inspiration. His role becomes central during the Wano arc, where the truth of his lineage is revealed to the Mink Tribe and the Nine Red Scabbards. He accepts his responsibility as the future leader of Wano, despite his youth and fear. During the raid on Onigashima, the retainer Shinobu uses her Ripe-Ripe Fruit ability to age Momonosuke into a young adult, granting him a mature body while retaining his childlike mind. He uses this new form to fight alongside the Straw Hats and the combined forces against Kaido, even facing the emperor in a dragon-to-dragon confrontation.
Momonosuke possesses several notable abilities. His artificial Devil Fruit grants him the power to transform into a large pink dragon and generate flame clouds, allowing him to fly and create fire-based attacks. He also demonstrates Conqueror’s Haki, a rare form of willpower typically possessed by those destined to become rulers. Additionally, he has the Voice of All Things, an ability that lets him communicate with Zunesha, the ancient elephant that carries the Mink homeland of Zou. After the battle, Momonosuke becomes the shogun of Wano, vowing to protect his people and open the country’s borders, fulfilling his father’s dream.
His key relationships include his retainers the Nine Red Scabbards, who serve and protect him; his sister Kozuki Hiyori, who survived in Wano under a hidden identity; and his parents, whose legacy he carries. His bond with Luffy is particularly important, as Luffy’s example of fearless leadership helps Momonosuke find his own courage. He also develops a connection with Yamato, who treats him as a worthy ally. Throughout his journey, Momonosuke evolves from a scared, boastful child into a determined young leader willing to sacrifice his own childhood for the sake of his country.
