Description
Manpuku Kuromaru fulfills dual roles as personal maid and jet racing partner to Kaguya Shijyuin within the Musashino Girls High School team Dress. Her family has served the Shijyuin household for generations as kunoichi, a heritage subtly integrated into her attire through gauntlets, reinforced thigh-high boots, and a red rope belt fastened with a shuriken. She routinely carries a large rolling pin strapped to her back.
Kuromaru possesses thigh-length pink hair, typically secured in low pigtails by yellow ribbons, with bangs framing the left side of her face and light green eyes. She stands 178 cm tall. Her casual outfit is a modified maid uniform: a deeply cut blue buttoned top revealing significant cleavage, a short blue skirt, a white frilled apron, and a headpiece. Her racing gear alternates between a full-coverage black and grey wetsuit with a black maid headpiece, and a red bikini paired with a white maid headpiece, serving both swimming and competition needs.
Her personality is excitable and agreeable, readily embracing competition. Kuromaru exhibits unwavering loyalty and protectiveness towards Kaguya, prioritizing Kaguya's well-being and success above her own, often pushing herself to physical exhaustion. She possesses a notably large appetite, frequently consuming oversized onigiri produced seemingly from nowhere, humorously reflected in her surname's meaning ("full stomach"). Valuing her shinobi heritage, she becomes defensive when others display stereotypical views or disrespect toward ninja traditions.
As the Shooter for team Dress, Kuromaru fires water cannons at opponents during races while Kaguya pilots the jet ski Tamakaze as the Jetter. Their coordination is formidable. In their first anime appearance, Kuromaru skillfully targeted Misa Aoi's underwear during a race, incapacitating Misa and Rin Namiki's vehicle to secure victory for Dress.
A significant video game story arc involves Kuromaru and Kaguya striving to prevent their school's jet racing program closure. Driven by dedication, Kuromaru trained relentlessly to support Kaguya, pushing herself to severe exhaustion. Recognizing this, Kaguya deliberately caused them to miss a race start time to enforce rest. This act, combined with rival teams' unexpected sportsmanship in agreeing to delay the race, allowed Dress to compete and win the Kandagawa Cup, saving their team.
In other game storylines, Dress features as a primary rival team. They lose a crucial "ownership of the river" bet race against Rin and Misa in the Kandagawa Jet Girls arc and later withdraw from the Cup, impliedly due to Kuromaru's recurring exhaustion. When facing the Unkai Surfers, Kuromaru expressed concern over their stereotypical taunts about shinobi practices. During the Grindcore story, Dress decisively defeated that team, challenging their aggressive approach and contributing to Kamui Kurenai's reassessment of her teammate and the sport.
Kuromaru appeared in the OVA episode centered on creating a Jet Racing promotional video, participating alongside Kaguya and other racers in filming segments. She had minimal dialogue throughout the series. Initial portrayals often emphasized her physical attributes, while subsequent narratives increasingly highlighted her loyalty, ninja background, and the physical toll of her dedication.
