Description
Saint Figarland Garling is a World Noble from the Figarland family, one of the founding families of the World Government. He originally held the position of Supreme Commander of the God's Knights, an enforcement group that acts as the lawkeepers of the holy land of Mary Geoise. Following the events on Egghead, he was appointed as a new member of the Five Elders, taking on the role of the Warrior God of Science and Defense.
Physically, Garling is an elderly man with a tall, imposing physique. He is distinguished by his long, light-colored hair and beard, which are styled into sharp, crescent-shaped spikes that frame his face. He wears dark, formal attire typical of a World Noble, paired with sunglasses that conceal his eyes. In his youth, he had a similar hairstyle but lacked the beard, and was considered exceptionally handsome by those around him.
Garling embodies the arrogant and cruel nature of the World Nobles, viewing all non-nobles as beneath him. He holds a particularly rigid ideology that protecting or associating with those of lower status makes a Celestial Dragon even worse than the common people themselves. This belief makes him utterly merciless, and he has shown no hesitation in executing a fellow Celestial Dragon, Donquixote Mjosgard, for the crime of defending a fish-man. He is a cold-blooded individual who treats people as disposable objects, having killed his own former wife without remorse when she was no longer convenient. However, he seems to possess a twisted form of paternal care for his blood relatives, showing admiration for his sons. Despite his viciousness, he behaves with a certain calm demeanor and speaks with an authority befitting his high rank.
His primary motivation appears to be the preservation and enforcement of the World Nobles' absolute superiority. He is deeply dedicated to his role in the God's Knights and later as an Elder, believing it is his duty to maintain order and purge what he considers worthless elements from the world. He takes pleasure in challenges, such as the human hunts on God Valley, viewing a handicap given to him as a way to make the competition more interesting.
Garling's role in the story is primarily as a major antagonist in the Final Saga. He is a prominent figure from the infamous God Valley Incident that occurred 38 years ago, where he acted as the champion of the Celestial Dragons' Native Hunting Competition, leading the slaughter of the island's native population. He then presided over the execution of Saint Mjosgard for his transgressions. After the death of Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, Garling was summoned to the Room of Authority and appointed as the new Warrior God of Science and Defense, making him one of the highest authorities in the World Government and a direct subordinate to Imu.
His key relationships are with his family. He is the father of Figarland Shamrock, who succeeded him as the commander of the God's Knights, and of Shanks, the captain of the Red Hair Pirates. While Shanks was found by Gol D. Roger as a baby after the God Valley Incident and grew up as a pirate, Garling has acknowledged him as a son. During the God Valley Incident, he personally confronted the Rocks Pirates captain, Rocks D. Xebec.
Garling's development sees him rise from the ruler of God Valley and champion of its deadly competition to the Supreme Commander of the God's Knights, and ultimately to one of the Five Elders, representing a significant shift in the World Government's power structure. As a young man, he was an active combatant, but in his elderly appearance, he wields authority more than a blade.
Regarding his abilities, while his full powers remain largely unseen, he is considered extremely formidable. As the former Supreme Commander of the God's Knights, his strength is acknowledged to be exceptional, even among World Nobles. He wields a saber and is a highly skilled swordsman. He was the champion of the God Valley hunting competition, indicating he was the strongest participant in that brutal event. After his promotion to the Five Elders, it is presumed by those in the world that he may share the same special regenerative abilities and potential for a monstrous transformation granted to the other Elders by Imu, though this has not been explicitly confirmed.
