Description
Maiharu Gansoku is an imposing Abashiri convict, standing roughly 193 centimeters tall with a powerful build. His shaven head, round spectacles, and handlebar mustache are distinctive features, often seen beneath a fur-collared jacket worn over a suit. A coded tattoo marks his upper torso. Initially incarcerated for *dojoyaburi*—challenging and ruining dojo masters—his escalating crimes led to Abashiri Prison.

Gansoku values strength and selectively engages in combat, primarily through *stenka*, a Russian folk wrestling form he considers self-expression. He believes violence is the primary means for others to understand him and found prison life agreeable due to its pervasive violence. Crowd reactions during fights affirm his identity, providing deep satisfaction. Despite his combative nature, he exhibits politeness, complimenting opponents and accepting handshakes. He displays masochistic tendencies, demanding opponents hit him harder and expressing pleasure in battle, yet prioritizes self-preservation, fleeing when outmatched or if his tattoo is targeted.

He possesses an intuitive grasp of emotions through combat, discerning that Sugimoto's anger wasn't personal during their conflict. He offers unexpected kindness, encouraging those in distress. While initially refusing to fight women on chivalrous principle, he abandons this if sufficiently excited by their strength. Creator Satoru Noda describes him as "a gentleman, but has a people hitting problem" with a "barbarian side."

His story unfolds in Karafuto, where he recognizes fellow convict Yoshitake Shiraishi and overhears talk of Sugimoto's survival. Witnessing Sugimoto, Tanigaki, Tsukishima, and Koito fight at a *stenka* event impresses him. After shaking Sugimoto's hand, he reveals his tattoo, sparking a confrontation. He challenges all four soldiers simultaneously, enduring their combined assault thanks to exceptional endurance. When Sugimoto becomes enraged, Gansoku flees into the forest, encountering a wolverine attack. Rescued by the soldiers, he takes refuge in a *banya*, raising the temperature and slapping them with a *venik*.

Following the wolverine's death, Gansoku confronts Sugimoto again. Sensing Sugimoto's inner turmoil during their fight, he advises him to forgive himself, acknowledging Sugimoto's efforts. Their battle ends when the ice collapses, plunging them into freezing water. Warming in the *banya*, Sugimoto proposes copying Gansoku's tattoo to spare him, and Tsukishima suggests relocating to Russia for *stenka* opportunities. Gansoku agrees and shares information about Asirpa's belief in Sugimoto's survival.

Gansoku departs Karafuto for Russia across drift ice. There, he encounters Akou prisoners, engages in fights, and later reunites with Sugimoto and Asirpa, assisting their group by carrying an injured Tsukishima. After a stop at a Nivkh settlement, he and Svetlana journey to the Russian mainland. In a port town, he fights local prisoners until their leader, Sofia Golden Hand, challenges him. Reluctant to fight her initially, he relents upon recognizing her strength. Their duel is interrupted by Svetlana, and Sofia invites him to join her. He declines, stating his intent to travel west to the Russian capital with Svetlana seeking more challenging opponents, subsequently embarking on various adventures together.

His abilities center on exceptional physical strength and endurance, allowing him to withstand simultaneous attacks from multiple opponents and endure extreme environments like high-temperature *banyas*. He considers only Tatsuma Ushiyama his equal or superior, as Ushiyama can defeat him using judo holds.

Gansoku enjoys chicken, eggs, and beans, but dislikes cucumbers and alcohol. His character design may draw inspiration from English criminal Charles Salvador, known for violent tendencies and bare-knuckle boxing.
