Description
Kohei Nikaido, a Private First Class in the 7th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army, is the older twin brother of Youhei Nikaido. The brothers share a close yet disturbed bond, exhibiting similar mental instability characterized by a disregard for orders and a pronounced enjoyment of inflicting pain. After Youhei's death at Sugimoto's hands, Kohei becomes consumed by an obsessive fixation on revenge, abandoning all other objectives upon encountering Sugimoto. His mental state deteriorates sharply, manifesting in delusions where he attributes his own lost body parts—first his ears, later his leg—to his deceased brother.
Physically, Nikaido possesses black irises and short black hair with a straight hairline. He suffers severe injuries: one ear torn off by a bear, the other severed by Lieutenant Tsurumi. He initially wears one severed ear on a string around his neck. Later, a craftsman named Edogai constructs a headpiece from human skin, reattaching the ear and incorporating unnerving details like nipple-like protrusions atop holes where his ears once were. During combat against Hijikata Toshizo, Nikaido loses his leg. Arisaka, an engineer with the 7th Division, provides a prosthetic leg that doubles as a concealed firearm holding three shotgun shells. In a later confrontation at Abashiri Prison, Sugimoto blows off Nikaido's right hand. Tsurumi again commissions Arisaka to create a prosthetic replacement; this hand features a compartment in one finger designed to hold chopsticks, a utilitarian feature that disappoints Nikaido due to its lack of combat functionality.
Following false reports of Sugimoto's death, Nikaido experiences a complete loss of motivation, withdrawing into a catatonic state where he refuses to leave his bed or eat. This period reveals his dependence on morphine, likely stemming from repeated severe injuries. He steals morphine supplies, and the mere mention of the drug can briefly rouse him from his depression.
His equipment includes a standard-issue Type 26 Revolver alongside his specialized prosthetics. He harbors a preference for Mandarin oranges. Narratively, he participates in the assault on Abashiri Prison and subsequent conflicts involving the pursuit of the Ainu gold.
