Description
Cocodrilo, also known as Don Cero, is a former member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea and a major figure in the world of One Piece. He is a tall man with a broad build, pale skin, and neatly slicked-back black hair. His most distinguishing features are a long, stitched scar running across his face from the bridge of his nose and a large golden hook that serves as his left hand, replacing the one he lost.
His public epithet "Sir Crocodile" belies a deeply cynical and ambitious nature. Initially appearing as the heroic protector of the Arabasta Kingdom, this was a carefully constructed facade. In truth, Crocodile is a master manipulator who orchestrated the country's civil war, using a banned substance called Dance Powder to create a drought and framing the king for the crime, all while positioning himself as the nation's savior. He is exceptionally cunning and intelligent, having kept his true identity as the president of the secret crime syndicate Baroque Works hidden from the world for years. Until his defeat, Crocodile harbored a deep-seated grudge against Whitebeard, one of the Four Emperors, who had defeated him in the past when he was a rookie aiming for the title of Pirate King.
Crocodile's personality is defined by a profound self-assurance and a disdain for the weaknesses of others. He enjoys toying with opponents, often displaying a smug and condescending laughter ("Kuhahahaha") in battle. He is ruthless and pragmatic, viewing trust and friendship as foolish ideas and willing to eliminate any subordinate who outlives their usefulness. This overconfidence proved to be his greatest flaw, as he repeatedly underestimated the willpower of Monkey D. Luffy, a mistake that ultimately led to his downfall and imprisonment. Crocodile's original motivation was to obtain the ancient weapon Pluton, which he believed was hidden in Arabasta, to amass the military power necessary to achieve his own ambitions.
Despite his villainous origins, his role in the story evolves into that of a complex antihero. After being defeated by Luffy and stripped of his Warlord title, he was sent to the maximum-security prison Impel Down. He later agreed to help Luffy escape in exchange for the chance to confront Whitebeard during the Summit War of Marineford. During this war, his actions became unexpectedly pivotal. While claiming to act purely out of irritation at the Marines, he saved the lives of Portgas D. Ace, Luffy, and Jinbe, directly confronting powerful adversaries like the World's Strongest Swordsman, Dracule Mihawk, and Admiral Akainu. Following Whitebeard's death, Crocodile's desire for revenge seemingly faded, and he declared his intention to return to the New World with his most loyal subordinate, Daz Bonez (Mr. 1).
Key relationships have shaped his path. He initially employed Nico Robin as his vice-president solely to decipher a Poneglyph, showing no loyalty to her. His dynamic with the revolutionary Emporio Ivankov is notably tense, as Ivankov possesses knowledge of a hidden "weakness" in Crocodile's past that he is deeply embarrassed by and desperate to keep secret. In the current era, following the dissolution of the Seven Warlords system, Crocodile has founded a new organization called Cross Guild alongside Dracule Mihawk. Using Buggy as a figurehead leader, Crocodile and Mihawk operate as the secret power behind the throne, establishing a system that places bounties on Marines.
Crocodile is a Logia-type Devil Fruit user who possesses the power of the Suna Suna no Mi, allowing him to create, control, and transform his body into sand. This ability makes him virtually intangible and nearly invincible in arid environments. Offensively, he can absorb all moisture from anything he touches, desiccating living beings, creating massive sandstorms, and shaping sand into lethal blades. His golden hook is not merely a prosthetic but a formidable weapon housing a potent scorpion venom capable of melting rock. While his original bounty was set at 81,000,000 berries, his renewed threat level is reflected in his current bounty of 1,965,000,000 berries as a co-leader of Cross Guild. It has also been established that he is proficient in both Armament and Observation Haki.
