TV-Series
Description
Marshall D. Teach, more widely known as Barbanegra, is a formidable pirate captain and one of the primary antagonists in his series. He serves as the admiral of the Barbanegra Pirates and, following a significant timeskip, holds the position of one of the Four Emperors ruling over the New World.
Teach is a massive, barrel-chested man with a prominent, crooked nose, several missing teeth, and a perpetual five-o'clock shadow of stubble that gives him his nickname. His thick, curly black hair is typically tied back and covered by a bandana. His appearance is a classic embodiment of the romanticized image of a pirate.
His personality is a complex and often contradictory mix of traits. On one hand, Barbanegra is a boisterous, gluttonous, and surprisingly jovial man who holds a deep, almost religious belief in destiny and the power of dreams. He shares many superficial qualities with his rival, Monkey D. Luffy, such as a carefree attitude, a competitive nature, and the unwavering ambition to become the Pirate King. However, this is where the similarities end. Beneath his cheerful exterior lies a ruthless, opportunistic, and profoundly immoral individual. He is willing to betray and murder his own crewmates without hesitation to achieve his goals, and he shows no mercy to his opponents. While he can be patient and calculating, waiting for decades to obtain a specific Devil Fruit, he is also prone to reckless overconfidence and cowardice when facing superior forces.
Barbanegra's primary motivation is an insatiable hunger for power and world domination. He believes the era of his former captain, Barbablanca, has ended and that his own rise is inevitable. Unlike other bearers of the initial D., who are often portrayed as liberators, Teach's path to power is built on treachery and ambition, seeking to claim the One Piece and the throne of the Pirate King at any cost.
His role in the story is that of a major antagonist and a dark mirror to the protagonist, Luffy. His actions are the catalyst for some of the most pivotal events in the world's history. After murdering a crewmate to steal the dark-dark fruit, he fled the Barbablanca Pirates, a crime that set his former commander, Portgas D. Ace, on a collision course with him. Barbanegra ultimately defeated Ace and turned him over to the World Government, an act that directly triggered a devastating war between the Navy and the Whitebeard Pirates. During this conflict, he delivered the killing blow to the already mortally wounded Barbablanca and, through an as-yet-unexplained method, stole his captain's earthquake powers for himself, making him the only known person to wield two Devil Fruit abilities simultaneously.
Key relationships define his journey. He was once a subordinate of Barbablanca, a man he both respected and ultimately betrayed. His defeat of Ace made him a sworn enemy of the Whitebeard Pirates' remnants, led by Marco. He shares a tense and violent history with Shanks, having given the Red-Haired Emperor his iconic facial scar in a fight long before eating his own Devil Fruit. His relationship with Luffy is one of ideological opposition; while Luffy seeks freedom and friendship, Barbanegra represents the corrupting pursuit of power for its own sake. More recently, his lineage has been revealed as the son of the legendary and immensely powerful pirate, Rocks D. Xebec, a fact that adds further weight to his ambitions and his unique physiology.
In terms of development, Barbanegra has risen from an unknown, seemingly unambitious member of a powerful crew to one of the most dangerous men in the world. He has systematically amassed power, from his original small group of loyal followers to recruiting some of the most heinous criminals from the deepest level of the underwater prison Impel Down. He consolidated his status by defeating the remnants of the Whitebeard Pirates in the "Payback War," officially becoming one of the Four Emperors.
His notable abilities are extraordinary. He possesses immense natural strength and durability, a testament to his unique body which has allowed him to survive the consumption of two Devil Fruits. His primary power is the Yami Yami no Mi, a logia-type fruit that grants him the power of darkness. This ability allows him to create gravitational vortices that can absorb and crush anything. However, unlike other logia users, his body does not become intangible; instead, he feels pain more acutely than a normal person, a risk he considers worth taking. The fruit's most dangerous trait is its ability to nullify the powers of any other Devil Fruit user he touches. His second power, the Gura Gura no Mi, is a paramecia-type that allows him to generate devastating earthquakes and tsunamis, giving him the power to destroy the world. In addition to these, he also possesses the ability to use both forms of Haki.
